Dissing HBCU's Posted on 08-18-2004

This morning on hot 97, the topic was historically black colleges, well anyway, people who hire for company's were saying that when they see applications and resume's from people who attend/ attended HBCU'S its an unwritten rule not to hire them. Anyway some callers felt that they would be better off going to a community college than our wonderful HBCU's. SO I just wanna hear how u guys feel about this, because it disturbed me to hear how our schools are frowned upon like we're the 13th grade.

But working in an HR office I know that we ONLY can look out for our own. The first step is getting the resume and saying the person is qualified...the next step is they are referred to an official who interviews and selects. I've found that not only do we look out for one another...BUT we can hold our own with interviews and other selection processes.

So y is it when the white people do it (looking out for their own) we get offended? I mean, i agree that we should look out for one another and it's not fair when we are passed over for a position because of what college we attended or our skin color, but would u consider what your companies are doing discrimination? Just asking

Well personally we're not "passing" application...atleast not at my job. If they meet minimum qualifications or are ranked high when scoring applications they are automatically turned over to the next official. So even if they are "passed" on the application wil be returned because they don't meet qualifications for that position. I'm just happy to see HBCU students and black folks in general do meet quals and are referred for selection. But I can attest for being looked out for...which often times is needed...because my internship has about 100 students and about 30 of us are black. And an alumnus from my school gave me the hook-up...but I'm sure she felt I was qualified...which I am.

I know this may be a little off topic, but a lot of times people are passed over for jobs because of their names. If your momma named u Quantashia, do u think you are going to be in the top Ten when these "white companies" pick applications for interviewing, i know this doesn't happen at all companies but it happens. I'm so happy my momma gave me a nice decent name (actually i have a white girls name)!!!! Okay, carry on, back to topic at hand!!!!

^^Yeah...I think folks steer away from names like that. But usually Shaquannanika's application has just as many mistakes as her attempt to spell her name in first grade.

because most people look at HBCU's as second rate joints ya know? For example... My cousin and a friend of hers worked at the same law firm. Both entered college at the same time. Both had a Bachelor's degree in the same field. Both had the same amount of experience. Both had the same job and position for the same amount of time, and both received a promotion. Now, my cousin graduated from the University of Maryland. Her friend graduated from FAMU. When they both got their promotions, my cousin received about 15,000 dollars more than her friend. I wonder why??.... But u know what my solution to that lil problem is??? Imma start my own business...then i dun need nobody to hire me! suckerzzzz!
This whole point u "attempted" to make is not valid because u do not know if your cuz worked harder than the other, if your cuzins friend was always late, etc. OR, if u could have showed where this happend on more than on occassion.
ok, well if my point is not valid, how come this discussion got started in the first place? Because, ALOT of ppl believe that HBCU's are not as good as PWI's. period. I know HBCU Alumni that feel this way.

i want to know how do white people even know that the school on the application is a hbcu. do they have a list hanging on the wall of all the hbcu's. i guess when they see a name of a school they never heard before they may ask around. but umm i think everyone has a pretty hard time finding a job once they get out of school. or maybe im just naive and think that people dont care about what college u went to as long as u did well

yea that's messed up.just cause you went to an HBCU don't mean nothing, just being Black in general in the corporate world is stereotypical not to be chosen for a job....but you just gotta be strong and determined to get what you want...
