I plan on applying early action to Howard and I have a visit on the 25th but to get that was really hard. I called and I called and when i finally got someone on the phone, they weren't even interested or cared that I was really interested in attending there. I don't want to take it personal, but it's really bugging me cause I got all these other "white" schools giving me scholarships and calling my house to speak to me but my heart is totally towards Howard! Im so confused! Someone help me!
Sweetie I am having the EXACT same problems with these hbcus. The difference between you and I is that I have yet to get in contact with someone at Howard. I have called, emailed, left messages, wrote and still no reply. I felt as if I practically had to beg Spelman for some information, let alone get scholarship information. Hampton did me the same way. So, when I saw their booth at out annual college night I expressed my feelings toward hbcus. The alumni kept saying sorry and promised to get me information. In the end I have been offered a $7500yr scholarship so far and I haven't even applied yet. However, I won't believe it until I see it in writing. The funny thing about my whole college selection process is how all these pwis have been sending me information since the beginning of my junior year last year. Even schools all across the country I have never heard of are included in these pilings. So, I don't know what to tell you. Growing up attending pwi's I always wanted the HBCU "experience" since I don't know what it's like to be around African-Americans. Now, I highly doubt it
What months did you attempt to contact them? The worst time is August and September to contact the HBCUs; the schools are trying to get financial aid, housing and class schedules situated. Keep in mind, the HBCUs are dealing with 1/2 the staff of PWIs and probably 1/4 of a PWIs endowements.
I know first empressions are lasting, but sometimes you got to look beyond the surface. PWIs may recruit you, but are the staff and students going to be there when you really need them? You most likely will end up just another number.

aww don't say that, you're not making me so sure about attending the HBCUs, I only started thinking about attending these schools, but the way all of you guys are saying that, about how the administrations are mean is sad. I would want colleges coming after me, not turning me away.. aren't all HBCU's supposed to welcome you with acceptance? I hope that's not how they feel towards applications or else I'd be ****.

I had that same problem with Hampton and Spelman when I tried to get information, but don't give up! If I had given up on Spelman, I wouldn't be here today. If they don't send you the information that you want, such as brochures and paper applications, etc., then go to their websites to get info and/or apply online. That's what I had to do. I'm still kinda disappointed at Hampton because the information that I requested back in October didn't come until March, after I had applied and been accepted! :?: :? If those are the schools that you really want to go to, don't give up on them, just be aggressive about getting the information that you need to get.
^^^I agree. I got accepted to Spelman and had to partically beg!!! I don't go there though  I go to a PWI. I like it though even though I feel people who attend a HBCU are better educated about our people. The African-American courses here are LIMITED. If you want to go to Howard get an "I'M DETERMINED" attitude. But at the same time prepare yourself for the worst. I'm glad I did prepare for the worst because I almost had a minor breakdown when I could not go to Spelman(money reasons, I didn't work hard enough.) Don't be sad, be glad. Don't worry about people. Go out there and do the-- thing(I don't cuss, so you put your own word where the dashs are located)

I'm a Student Ambassdor/ student Recruiter for Morehouse.
Even though I understand that you all are interested in the top HBCU's...please keep in mind that you all are not the only people interested in these schools.
At Morehouse, the admissions clerk gets an average of 350 -500 Application request a day. There is only a few personal in the admissions office, which include the two application processors, the secretary, the dean's secretary, Associate Dean, 4-10 student part-time recruiters for tours, and the Recruiters. Keep in mind the Deans and Recruiters have to travel all the time for Morehouse...With that being said, it takes a lot of time to send and mail applications out by mail.
Another thing that holds people back is the fact that applications are paper and need to be ordered from the company. Without an application, accurate admissions material, and mailing tools, applications can not be sent out. You would not like a half-**** application package would you?
Money also is a problem, most of these schools are private, therefore they cannot afford large staff or top machines like Harvard, Yale, or a state school possess.
They honestly try there best to serve the mass number of potiential students for their school. My best advice is to be patient and start early. Downloading the application can also help.
Trust me, the admission personal at top HBCU's have it hard......
Howard, Morehouse, Spelman, Hampton, FAMU, Xavier, all deal with numerous amounts of students trying to entert he gates of their haven. It is a hard yet rewarding process....but my advice is to be patient.
Another good thing to do is to write the dean, not to beg to get in your perspective school, but to get an insight on admissions and their day-to-day operations, and how much stress he or she is under. I promise you, they will write you back as soon as they can, and it CAN help you!
