Stepshows are like hip hop. It should be done one way but instead its the other.
Then Let's take into consideration all the "dancing" (cough cough) people are doing in shows...Do you think that it is necessary to win a show? I seen alot of DANCING and VIDEOS in the last stepshow I went to...Isn't a stepshow supposed to be 12-15 minutes of stepping?
I will be completely honest. Dancing and Videos are a way to impress lameduck judges which is very sad. It is called a Step-Show. Not a Dance-Show or a Video-Show. It doesn't take much to impress anybody anymore and thats a shame. I'm all for a step-off. Music for the Intro, Music for the outro. Step thoughout between that and call it a night. Not dance through the intro, dance through where you are suppose to be steppin, and dance through the outro....its kinda getting crazy. What every happened to Precision in your steps? It doesn't count for anything anymore. I just saw a step show and saw them fall 3 times and still place second. That bothers me.
Funny I saw that same show...but the girls fell 4 times and got second. I think there is a problem with the judging system at some shows too. Some judges like to group up with their "unoffical brother/sister" and score badly so that their organization can win. It's a sad shame what stepshows have came down to. To be honest, I dont understand why the guys take off their shirts and stuff, and I've seen groups win because of it. It's sad, but true.

Love to, but....I live in North Carolina and there are two stepshows on that same day that I'm interested in going to: UNC-Chapel Hill and Elon U.

Sorry to post AGAIN but...i realize I didnt answer the orignal question.... 1) best themes...umm, let's see. The Sigma Men did "You Got Served" at our homecoming..it was excellent but it contained dancing but the theme wouldn't of been possible if they did not dance some of the time. Also our Alphas did "In Living Color" but they did too much of the acting instead of the stepping, which is probably why they got second place. This isnt one of your questions, but one of the most played out themes is MICHEAL JACKSON, please leave that man alone. Just about everyone who has done Micheal Jackson has won the stepshows, but it's time to call it quits. 2) Good Step Teams...I give to the Alphas that graduted this past spring 2004 who still come back to step. Nice to see some new people step, but the old guys still got it. Ladies...well...I know the Zetas were nice my sophomore year, i don't know what happened though. I haven't really saw a sorority step team that made me just you know, say damn...but I heard the Rho's were doing their thing....  3) Outfits: I havent seen any bad outfits since a frat came out in those cowboys outfits...Oh there was one stepshow I went to and a certain sorority had their girls in short shorts, those cheerleading shorts and not everybody was the size for the shorts so there was some technical difficulties going on. 4) Pictures...I dont have none of those... 5) Everybody who didn't win first place especially the slipping beauties need more prep time. Just wanted to answer the original question...

I disagree with dancing to impress judges. I've judged several shows and we sit and talk Sh*t about why people don't step anymore. Young Greeks do that stuff to impress the crowd. Judges like to see STEPPING. Back when I was in school, there were no video screens and other craziness like nowadays, but the shows sold out! Most of the high school teams do a better job nowadays.
I have to disagree on that one. The past stepshows i've been to...The dancers and actors won everytime. Crowd Participation must be hard to get without dancing these days. But some themes require a lil dancing like SigmaLaydee said. My chapter did some dancing but there were alot more steps and transitions to go with it.

I second that disagree...if people came to our shows and it was just stepping then...I don't think that many people would go or yet stay...I think it takes alot of creativity to have a great stepshow nowdays, because people are used to seeing like crazy acts and you can thank the media for that...even though they may have stepped and that's in before, it's more like nowdays, if you do that, you're gonna get booed offstage and people will laugh. I guess that is why people are forced to dance and take off their shirts and play videos in their shows. But it's all in the rules that we have to step by. People should protest to have step shows where all you do is step. Maybe then the real winners will emerge. But I also think you need to get some real judges besides people who aint never stepped but just in the organization.

I am not easily impressed with themes, especially since the originality in themes have been non existent these days  I can't tell you all how many times I've seen the People's Court theme or the XYZ stepping academy/stepping school theme, etc...all that mess is highly played out IMO. I'd rather see a crunk **** show with lots of stepping and chants rather than, as my frat put it, a "movie" anyday
