Black Republicans: Uncle Toms or Modern Thinkers? Posted on 01-23-2004
de Bohème

There seems to be a rather healthy population surge of Blacks joing the ****. I'd like to ask you all (regardless of political alignment) what you think of Blacks that claim to be Republicans. Some of the more well known Blacks/Reps like Alan Keyes believe that the Democratic party is the true enemy of Blacks and that the political and social climate of America is prime for blacks to be accepted by white republicans (i think it's a crock of shyt, but please, express your opinions). Common cliches used by BRs is that the Republican party is more in line wih their values on crime, family and self reliance. I personally, happen to know lots of blacks that don't like crime, enjoy taking active roles in the raising of their children, and would enjoy having there own communities to live in if it weren't for institutional racism and corporate smashing (you can't talk about self reliance in the black community when black owned business in South Central are torn down and replaced with billion dollar corporate retail chains that don't put much profit back in the community!!!). Well, that should get the ball rolling ( the HBCU reps should be at my throat in no time), so express your thoughts...

and the lesser of the two evils are the democrats? that's like saying, "i can't afford kool-aid...but instead of drinking sugar water, let me just chug down this gallon of horse ****.."

wow! what an analogy "horse ****" lol.... I was actually listening to two people debate this same topic. The conclusion that they came to was that....Although historically Blacks were republican, we are now democratic (atleast that is the image presented). Many people don't even know WHY they are democrats, other than the fact that they are black and its the party for "Black people". I believe that it has a lot to do w/your financial status in addition to knowing your own beliefs and standpoint. Some issues that are addressed by republicans don't necc. concern/appeal to people of the lower classes. But i refuse to limit myself to voting democrat b/c thatz what my parents are. Being republican DOES NOT make you an "UNCLE TOM". Maybe the person that believes that it does and is only a democrat because they are black is the real "UNCLE TOM" b/c you're selling out yourself. Because you don't know and won't take the time to figure out your own beliefs and where you stand

Who said the lesser of two evils is a democrat :? ? Some years it's a Republican (but not this year, in my opinion :?) other years it's a Democrat and even more years it's someone of neither party (but of course they will NEVER get voted into office). Perhaps you should have put as much energy into reading the post as you put into your analogy (as urbane as it was :? ). 8)

Hotep, When I began to read some of the comment about this post I myself was flabbergasted at the thought of what person’s said about their political views. As we all know from the past I am a Political Science Major and for that reason nothing really surprises me that often but to hear individual say that I am a Republican that is fine. However, what is it that makes you prefer such a substandard party that rarely cares about the likelihood of Black Americans as a whole and issue are not compliant to the needs of Black Americans. What I don’t understand is most persons who hold a membership within the republican party are upper middle class and Upper Class Black American but seldom have I ever been exposed to College Student who seem to be so empathetic about the Republican Party! So, Then I tried to say maybe it’s because of their parents but I do recall many of you declaring that that you were not from an affluent household. Therefore, I am bewildered at the fact of these people’s view at such a critical time in their lives. Nonetheless, what I concluded is that they are just simple-minded college student, who like myself are very impressionable and easily influenced. Therefore, I take it like a grain of salt it’s just a trend that by the time most of us graduate and if we continue to have dialogue over the net then we will see a progressive change in many of Their Views. Prince…I know why is he posting again?
