HBCU or Ivy?

I know I posted this question in another forum but I want to know what the peeps in here think. OK...I always wanted to go to Howard University but recently I have been accepted to a white prestigious school here in california. My fellow classmates and educators except me to attend this other school all because of it's name. Certain individuals feel that i shouldn't choose an HBCU over an "Ivy" type but I feel that I always have graduate school. So why not be in a better environment for undergrad around what I am familar with. However, I still have that opportunity. So, if you were in my shoes which one would you choose? And please don't say "Follow Your Heart" it's good advice but it doesn't help. So HBCU or IVY? If you're wondering I am talking about Stanford. I know it's not a real Ivy but California peeps tend to think it's the Ivy of the West. Danielle Future c/o '09 Carson, Cali

I know exactly where you're coming from...every one I know (including my dad) expected me to apply to all these "big name" schools like Cornell, Columbia, etc, but I knew from day one that my heart was with attending an HBCU, so three of the four schools i applied to were HBCUs (Spelman, Howard, Xavier of LA). I got into all four of my schools, and to tell you the truth I wasn't at all excited when I got into the PWI that i applied to...I didn't even bother applying to Cornell, cuz I knew that even if I went there, I wouldn't feel completely fulfilled...I would feel like I'd be lacking something. That's exactly why I chose to attend Spelman this fall. Ivy-Leagues are great...they have great reputations, great resources, etc, but the way I see it your undergraduate experience really shapes you for the rest of your professional life. I don't see the big deal about getting a bachelor's at some big-name school...why not go to a school of lesser hype (to the white society) but equally as good that will build up your confidence as a black female in today's society and then show them how well prepared you are for grad school/your years beyond college? In other words, I'm attending Spelman for undergrad and then will go to an Ivy for grad. I believe teh first four years of college should be a fun experience, both academically and socially, and attending an HBCU will be the best one for me. Dont' listen to what other say. I followed my heart.. just follow yours (that's all you can do cuz at the end of the day you have to live with your decision, not anybody else) ;-) Hope I helped!

She was saying that Californians think of Stanford as the equivalent of an Ivy League school...and Princeton's in NJ ;-) The IVYs are Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Univ of PA, Columbia, Cornell, Brown and Dartmouth

Dannie05, I strongly recommend visits to both schools. The campus visit is vital. During my time as a college counselor, I took several students on campus visits. In many cases, the visit was the deciding factor. It's all about what?...Your comfort level. Find the right fit for you. I went the "non-traditional" route. PWI for undergrad in Cali. HBCU for grad school in AL and GA. For me personally, the HBCU experience was more balanced: academically, culturally, psychologically, socially.... Congrats on gaining admission to both schools. Good luck!!!

That's the new acronym. Public Ghetto Institutions. That would probably be the best choice for you. Try Compton Community College. Or Southwest. I heard that's a good place for underachieving negroes.
