What's So Great About HBCU's Anyway? Posted on 04-14-2005

Main City, CA
This is my question. I hear all kind of people lauding the HBCU experience and seem utterly enraptured with the idea that they will be able to spend the four years of their undergraduate experience with people who share their same ethnic background. 1st question: Is this at all representative of real life? From my personal experience I have found that we, or at least in the upwardly socio-economic realm that you high achieving and socially conscious African-American (predominantly) hope to take part in, live in a white world. How will an HBCU where you will be surrounded by people like you and taught be professors like you be at all representative of real life? Or at least the one you hope to be living? My 2nd question involves personal and academic preference. I have been accepted into a number of Universities and can go anywhere I want. So what would make me want to attend a HBCU rather than a more traditional Ivy League school or one of its equivalents when my goals is to become as educated as possible and subsequently be the most qualified for any future position or work that I would like to pursue. Furthermore, how diverse can an HBCU be and how much can you learn about other cultures/environments when you are surrounded my only one megaculture?

hmm lemme see whas so great about hbcus?????? -family(ivy league schools dont care about u as a person they jus want u for numbers) -academics(u can get the same education from howard that u can get from harvard) fun-(picture having fun and chillin' wit ivy league brat) and jus being around people tha tyou know u can have a great college experience with. everywhere u go will be diversified. at an ivy league school all you gonna meet is smart uptight brats and all they wanna do is be betta than you. so we live in a white world..........that doesnt mean we have to spend OUR college experience co-existing unhappily with them. trust me it is better to go where you are happy then to go where u are miserable. look at the statistics people that go to ivy league schools are miserable they go through so much stress and hard work that education becomes a strain rather than beneficial. but if u think u as a black woman would be more happy at an ivy league school than by all means go. if u wanna spend college being surrounded by geeks than go. if u wanna spend college being a NUMBER than go. but nothin can top the experience of an hbcu...nothing can beat chillin on the yard...nothing can beat goin to a real greek party...nothing can beat chillin in a student center where everybody isnt studying all the time......nothin can beat goin to a probate.....nothing can beat being around your people college doesnt have to all be about getting ahead and being the best at everything. it can be about building friendships too. it can be about having fun too. and at a hbcu (HOWARD) u can get the best of both worlds. or u can go to an ivy and be anotha geek. nothing can beat an HBCU

Now I appreciate and love HBCU's as much as the next person who takes pride in their culture. And that's why an HBCU (Howard) is my choice of school. But that statement is completely false. As i said before, I love and am attending an HBCU in the fall, so this post has absolutely nothing to do with putting down an HBCU, it is simply fact so i can help other people in their decision process etc. And I agree with everything everyone has said besides that statement, but i just had to comment on this one because everyone always says that, but it's not true. And if u notice, it's always students who make that comment. I severely doubt if u went to your professor and asked him if howard and harvard offer the same education he would agree that they do. There's a reason why they're in the top 5. Their work load, and sometimes even their work material, is completely higher than that of Howards. Also, many of their professors are absolute geniuses, which directly affects the content of the work. When i picked Howard as my first choice of school i realized that later in life i "may" be looked over by a boss if i were going for a job against someone who graduated from an Ivy League school, but that was a chance i was/am willing to take to have a great experience at my college, and still receive a great education. Anyway, I think that's enough blabbing outta me :?

I agree with this guy. Though HBCUs are an incredible place, you simply cant compare the quality of education. And this rabbit kid must have a lot of misdirected anger towards pwi's (how many did he get regected from?) regardless, I love HBCUs except for the lack of white people. Where are all my white girls?

What are you guys a bunch of racists? How can you be so ignorant and blind. I dont understand it. We got out of slavery. We got equal rights and why shouldn't we have equality in hbcu's now? It makes no sense. You are the most racist people I have ever heard to say that you should jump me because I actually like to date girls who are not overweight or saturated with an overabundance of melanin and can hold an intertaining non-ebonics conversation that is not characterized by steriotypical lapses from standard english.

^^Nobody's racist 1.) It was a joke 2.) You made it sound as if white girls were better than black girls when u accompany what u posted in this thread with the post in the prospects forum 3.) It's pretty ignorant to say where are your white girls at in an hbcu forum 4.) It's pretty dumb to ask where are your white girls at in an historically BLACK college

wow, there goes that misdirected anger again. By saying harvard and princeton wanted you to apply do you mean you dot that little postcard that everybody in the world gets? oh wait, you put your name on their mailing list didn't you and when they started mailing you stuff you decided that that meant that they wanted you to apply. you make me laugh. harvard wanted you to apply. yeah, so they could regect you. do you really think that you are gonna be successful if you blow up on everybody who expresses an interest in a female of the race other than the one you share. or wait, maybe it offends you because that is what your father did. you do know your father dont you? rabbit, is your mom white? does someone suffer from self hatred and tries to overcompensate by being the staunchest pro HBCU advocate on the message boards? makes you kinda think doesnt it. and why does it strike me that who share a name with the blackest white person i've ever seen on the silver screen ever: b rabbit. and how appropriate that is because i'm sure that is a possible nickname for what everybody calls you in real life. you're a b*tch rabbit,

Wow, and I almost thought that you were smart. A national achievement scholar. You’re a joke. National Merit Scholar. 2.9 GPA, that’s funny too, what’s your GPA? Mine is 4.6. And what kind of athlete calls himself rabbit? What do you do? Are you the jump-rope champion? Dumb b*tch. And you certainly do have a hatred for ignorance, it explains your self hatred now doesn’t it.
