**Someone will move my thread even though I INTENDED for it to be in the YARD**
It's amazing how far a person would go just to become popular at a particular college and it's even crazier at what people DO to try to stay at the top!!
How else would one explain why people go through a rigorous 6+ week process just to join an organization? Brother Hood, sisterhood? Maybe for some but the majority is seeking popularity.
Just yesterday at Tips school, SIUC, I witnessed a probate show. The "alphas", kids that claim to be men, broke out into a brawl with members of Beta Phi pi and several members of the football team.
Why else would an Alpha yell out to a group of people that they are a bunch of b*tches and won't do sh*t to them?? What did he have to gain from that??
R.E.S.P.E.C.T...
Should I mention that he got his **** whooped??
Even before the damn probate got started. Active member's pf the Frat wanted to show the crowd that they do in fact haze by throwing the pledges around and roughing them up. Guess what happed...
One of the pledges severely turned his ankle and I overheard that he may broke it. Either way he had to be carried away. Due to the injury.
He among the rest of their frat wanted to show how "they are popular" "rough", "tough" and "how no one on campus could f*ck with them"...
Is that what the sole purpose of being in an Org. is about?
Popularity? To push people down while you think you're in the "In crowd"??
At times I reevaluate this whole "GreeK" thing. I'm not saying everyone should be included but most people that pledge, more so for men, are insecure with themselves.
Why else would they try sooo damn hard to prove to the student body that they are the best on campus? You know,
"Look how DEEP we are"
"Hey look at us!! We throw the best Parties"
"We will even stroll all night and not even think about dancing with the ladies just to show our pride..."
-I found it funny that two Ques strolled all night last night ignoring all the beautiful women in the club just to dance with each other...Sorry but lol
"F*ck the Alphas..How are ya'll gonna start with 5 and end with 5..Ya'll a bunch of 'Paper B*tches'.."
- From an Outraged member of Iota Phi Theta(Not me)..He was upset at the fact the Alphas were popular but weren't REAL..Or Real like the Iotas because they infact "haze"...
This whole "greek" thing is out of control. This was not the purpose founders of each Org intended on..
Sometimes..I dont want to be apart of it anymore...
I don't think anyone should get discouraged from something that is truly in their heart. If u have a desire to make a positive change within the Black community, then u can do that. And just because some people don't represent those same ideals and standards, doesn't mean that it should deter you away from being the one to make a difference. You could apply that to just about anything. Every person in college isn't necessarily here for the same reasons or for the RIGHT reasons, but should that stop you from wanting to get an education? Every person in church isn't necessarily there to hear the word and worship God, but should that stop you from going and praising Him for yourself? And every person isn't greek for the right reasons, but if the people who actually have a mind to be better than that let the negatives stray them away, then where would that leave our organizations?

THATS MY N*GGA KENYA !!!! Preah on girl...
like ive wanted to be greek, but the thing that scares me the most is the thing that was described above, and also my grandparents belonged to eastern star and mason.....
* walks in * looks down at my siggy * walks out *
Ha, my grandmom was secretary of our chapter, and i almost got beat down as a kid when i tried to read her lil white booklet...with rules and stuff...heck i didnt know! :o ...i thought it was a bible....but yeah thanks Kenya!...
im interested in an org *which i cant say*....but we'll see how that goes next year....
i think that a lot of people do join GLO's for "fame". i have seen so many people on my yard that want to be members of various org's but they want it for the wrong reasons. They want to join because they either like the colors, like the fact that they are "deep" or that they are "real". they never stop to see if the organization is really something that they wanted to be a part of or if the org stands for the same things that they do.
The one thing that all greeks on my yard who i have talked to has told me from day 1 is. " you shouldnt be defined by your org. your org is just another part of who you are and what you believe. and you share simular beliefs with other people. its not what your org can do for you, its what you can do for your org."
in my search, thats something that i've kept in mind, what i was interested in at first ended up being something i couldnt see myself being a part of. its all about knowing who you are and what you believe and would any of these orgs enhance or support those beliefs.

That is why we always say research, do your research, and make sure make the decision for yourself.
Yes there are gonna be people who join an organization for all of the WRONG reasons... there are gonna be T-shirt wearers in every organization, and people who honestly dont do sh*t... But, you should not let that stop you persue your dream.
Now yes there are some people who become Greek just for the "fame"...But you believe that all these people in these organizations are doing this for the "fame and respect". Obviously its much more than that... :???:
Im done for now...

It's simple...
People join organizations for reasons that BENEFIT them...
If "Fame" wasnt important then there will be more members in SGRHO as well as IPHIT. "Fame" has always been considered when choosing a Greek Org. Connections, meeting new people are some of the reasons why people pledge..
im not saying that ALL greeks do it for fame, but i have seen some people choose an organization for the fame. i've seen people join CGLO's just so they can have letters. Ive seen females become sweethearts just so they can stroll(which really bothers me because they can do all the strolls but cant tell you what the sole purpose of them being a sweetheart is) im not greek or anywhere near being greek, so i wont sit here and try to tell a greek that they are wrong for doing what they chose to do. but you can always tell which greeks are t-shirt wearers(as yall say) and which ones actually work.

Networking is different from obtaining fame, And even so are you sayin that people "pledge" only for the networking aspects of the organizations?
Also, What would fame have to do becoming and SGRho, or and Iota? are you saying that they have fewer members because new members wouldnt be known or respected on their perspective yards? (Also remember that Iota Phi Theta was founded in 1963). Or are you sayin that people join organizations just for an image? Could you please clarify this, because I dont completey understand what you are tryin to say... :???:

I think depending on where you live you are influenced by what is poppin on the yard at your school..Being from the south there is a lot of talk about people wanting to be an AKA, or a DELTA. When I ask friends of mine wy they choose those directions they say because this person is one, or that person is one. I have yet to hear someone say because of the work that they do. When I graduated high school, there teachers that we all looked up too that were members of the mentioned sororities.
Truth be told you never know what you may or may not like until you see these organizations in action, and wanting to join is one thing, but being invited is something completely different.
