Aight, me and my friends are about to end our freshman year here at spelman college, so we decided to write sorta the female version to pimptights 'letter' to incoming freshman.
ORIENTATION WEEK
Many call this our week in prison. Y, because you cant spelman campus the whole week of orientation. Its cool, but then u have those girls that cant wait for the week to end, and they are tryna climb over spelmans gates... and those gates have sharp tops. One girl had her hand bandaged b.c she tried to climb the fence (no lie).
There are many programs that they tell us we are required to go to, you dont really have to but we reccommend going to them, this when u begin to make aquintances.
Sometime that week you are assigned an SOL leader and she is supposed to guide you, and answer ne questions you might have about the school, thats str8 cuz u meet friends.
Make sure u have white outfit, skin tone stockings, and blk closed shoes.
When we go out of 'prison' thats when the school year really started.
DORMS
The 4 freshman dorms are, Abby, Manley, HH, and LLC
Abby is the farthest dorm, nobody walks over there, its too far away.
Manley (thats where we stay) is rigth near the post office, cafe, grill, basically everything u need.
HH, same this as manley
LLC is kinda far away, but its close to the gym
The bathrooms are not **** style, they have curtains, so u can shower in peace. In manley we have a section of the shower wear u can sit down, and put ur clothes down, and hang them up. Bathrooms dependin on how the people on ur floor are usually are clean.
Some dorms have computer labs, exercise rooms, air conditioning.
BRING FANS, its hot the first couple months, but u get used to wit.
RIVARLY
There is rivarly between the 3 schools, the dorms, the states, the classes
Everyone has there chants and cheers all that, but in the end its all in fun, in some cases. Spelman-Clark, Clark-Morehouse. Everyone will prob tell u that u are the nicest girl they met from spelman, dont change, but maybe its b.c they havent met ne spelman girls b4
CLUBS
Pimptight said that people fight and all that to go to the clubs on shuttle, but thats only like the first couple of times. After that people find friends wit cars, people stop going tot he club, all different things. One thing to know is that flyers say ladies free b4 11/12 its a lie. The promoters open the doors at like 10:30 and its hard to get in free.... its hard but not impossible, if u get on the first 2 shuttles, ur str8.
Guys act a fool in the club at times, jumping around all time of stuff, the first 2 months, guys will prob fight all the time, but as the year goes on its rare guys fight in the club.
2nd semester, not that many people are still going to clubs alot, unless its a big event. most people are at house parties or doin there on thing.
580 is the club everyone has been going to, its close to spelman, and the shuttles run more frequent
velvet room, club envy, the aquarium, the library, level 3, spf 15, thats all i can thing of.
SOCIAL LIFE
Atlanta is boring to me, but it could be b.c im from ny, to other people from different states this is the big citylife. but it could be boring b.c i dont havea car. but when i say boring, i mean, when nuthin is going on its boring. You got the Mall, bowling, movies, hawks games, braves games, concerts
HOMECOMING
its was fun. bring a nice dress for the homecoming ball. nuthing to dressy, prom dress is a lil over the top. but if thats what u do, wear it.
concerts, celebrities, step shows, etc
GUYS
umm, we definetely were disappointed when we came here. y did the RAs tell us they were our blessing, lol, buts all good. maybe the class of '08 will be cuter, but the guys are aight. The guys thing they are playas, girls think they are pimps. I personally enjoy clark guys better, my friends like morehouse guys. U can be sucked into the stereotype and think clark guys are 'harder' and morehouse guys are 'soft'. But ima be real, its kinda true. But i got love for all the guys cuz, if u male u male, u cute, u cute, u nice u nice.
Make sure if u seen around alot, its in a positive light, b.c no one know that u r going to visit johnny in hubert hall for bible study, and right after u see johhnny u need to get a book from bobby, in white hall. to an innocent bystander it looks like u are pimpin/hoe'in.
Umm the locals will try to holla at u when u walk up the marta station(the train ), up the strip(hangout spot out side)
THE STRIP
its an area where everyone chilled the first month, it was the hot spot, people got dressed up to walk outside for hours. this is cool cuz u meet mad guys, and u become better friends wit the girls.
its not as dangerous as people make it seem, i mean yea walk in groups because its practical, but if u wanna walk to morehouse by urself at 10 at nigth dont be scared. stegalls is located at the end of the strip. its a place where people can get juice, soda, food, snacks, blacks, w.e. I personally never at food at stegalls, when u see it u will understand why. But i heard the chicken wings are good.
VISITATION
is a joke. guys are allowed in the dorms from 6pm- 11:30 and need to be off campus by 12:00
they can be on campus during the day but they need to have a class.
only time alot of guys are on campus is if its market friday ( when merchants come to sell their stuff, and everyone stands around listening to music, and watchin the greeks stoll)
if u wanna chill wit ur boo, go to morehouse, they arent that strict.
ACADEMICS
School isnt hard. You make it **** urself if u dont study, if u dont hand in ur work, and if u never go to class. 'nothing is hard if you prepare' someone said that.
UPPERCLASSMEN
umm, who are they, today for the first time i saw the seniors. but its cool. u mostly will see freshman and sophmores on campus.
some ofthe upperclassmen dont even look old, u will think they are a freshman.
its easier to spot a male upperclassmen then a female upperclassmen, sometimes.
umm thats all we can think of right now, but fill free to drop comments.
the truth abotut spelman is just the title, its something to catch the eye. this is all based on our experiences, everyone is different.
we had a great time this year, and i hope next year you all have fun too.
thanks for the head's up...even though i live in ATL...Henry Co. to be exact...shhh...i plan on visiting Spelman sometime soon...what about the costs...i understand it ain't cheap but what are some of the prices...my mommy is doing everything in her might to keep me away from Spelman...I can't help it, its in my blood!!
This was really informative, thanks...
I have a question though...how easy is it for freshman to get on-campus jobs? If they are eligible for federal work-study...and if they aren't. I don't think I am.
all i know about on campus jobs is that you can work study really newhere on campus: as a desk aid in the dorms, working in different offices on campus, in the gym, in the language lab, in the computer lab. I just dont know how these people recieved these jobs.
I know people who work in the cafeteria, and in the grill ( thats a place where people go to escape the cafeteria food) and they work there for real money not for work study. For that i know one of my friends she just asked the people if they were hiring and they said they were, and she got the job. I guess if u are assertive you can get ne job u want.
wow, i wrote that whole thing, and i forgot to speak about food.
ok college and food can be 2 things, your best friend or ur worst enemy.
for me it was both... i LOVE to eat, so when i came to spelman and i could only eat 3 meals a day... it was horrible, but i also lost weight, so it was a good thing. every talks about the freshman 15, there is no WAY i will repeat, no WAY you can gain 15 lbs, from college cafeteria food. you WILL gain weight if you order out every night. Even if u order out every night, its still hard to gain alot of weight, b/c 1. as a frshman, you dont havea car, so u walk everywhere... the marta, the westend, morehouse, around campus, clark, publix. so u will be exercising without u even knowin.
the food in the cafe, is ok. fried chicken wednesday, and fried fish fridays, is when u see people come together as a school community, u see faculty, upperclassmen, its amazing. tuesday and thursday is like their hamburger/ hotdog/french fries day. every now and then u get a surprise and the food will be pretty good. the food isnt horrible, but u get tired of eating chicken and pizza everyday.
there are many sections to the cafe. the pizza, the salad, the desserts, the pasta, cereal, and others. so u can choose from a variety of things.
if ur not in the mood for cafe food go down the the grill, the have pizza (if noone has noticed, its the same as upstairs) chicken fingers, burgers, philly cheese steak... and more, OOO and smoothies, cookies, snadwiches, but u can only use 25 dollars worth on ur student ID, after that u need to pay money.
umm what else... this is off topic but bring lots of quarters, cuz u need to do ur laundry.
thats it for now, i will prob think of more stuff later on... next time i think iwill talk bout ur morehouse brothers that u get, and ur brother dorms.
Lets see,
The guys are morehouse are in categories....
You got the wannabe thugs, these are the guys who come from suburbia, and they try to act different from how they were back at home, these guys usually act hard, wear jersey and long tees all the time, use the word ****, though they never used it b4 they came to morehouse, and they smoke weed, probably for the first time.
You got the actually, 'thugs', they arent thugs but they actually experienced the inner city streets, the welfare, the food stamps, and all that, they dont need toact hard, b/c they have the air about them that shows that they come from different backgrounds. They dont need to start fights, they dont even need to act like how they act on the streets, b.c they nuthin to act hard for, b.c to them morehouse guys are soft.
you got the preppy type dressign guys, they act preppy
you got the soulful guys, who love to go to poetry readings, and all that.
over all the guys are morehouse they are cool, they are good friends, u willhave fun partyin wit them, and what not.
clark
from what i experienced, they are total opposite of morehouse guys, they are harder, and they dont try to front. by second semester u will be tired of morehouse and want to talk to clark guys, depending on ur type of guy.
you will recieve morehouse brothers, these are other freshman who are paired up with spelman freshman. ur morehouse brother will be either ur good friend, someone u will never talk to a again, someone u will see once and awhile and who u will say hi to, or he can be someone that u end up dating, maybe marrying
the guys are cute in the AUC, but then u have those who arent, but everyone type is differnt.
