I Want Your Thoughts: Summer Concert...What Age? Posted on 06-07-2005
College Mom

Thanks... I am planning to take my nieces to the Summer Concert that includes 50 cent, Eminem and Lil Jon. They are 17, 16 and 12. Another family member is livid that I would one, take them period and that I would especially take the 12 year old. I have always taken our son and all his friends to various concerts since he was like 10 years old. Matter of fact I'll be going to Summer Jam with him and his friends again this summer...makes our 8th year. He gets to pick my fit from head to toe. This year I (he picked it) got me an akademik jean and red skirt/shirt and some matchin' red/blue nikes...it's cute. Son got taste. Question: How old were you when you went to your first Concert "like" this? Question: What do you think in general about this for the girls ? Note: This is NOT an internet PARENTING question so please hold the "salt".

WELL...since ya asked...lol...Im wondering why this college mom isnt using her head. Its boggling my mind that she wont think like a mom and not a friend when actually thinking its ok to bring a 12 yr old to a 50 Cent/Eminem concert, and why the hell she is still going to rap concerts with her son and his homeboys and shopping for the cute outfits and sh*t with him like she is still a teenager.

I gotta agree with the rest of you, it just seems strange to be going to a hip hop concert with your mom. It doesn't look right, and then he buying you a whole outfit! wow..It does seem like you're the type of mother "who wants to be young." It may not be true, but this is how we're preceiving you to be. I'm surprised at your son, for even wanting to take you. Most kids/teenagers despise it, better yet, most parents don't even like their kids to listen to rap. But ah well you're free to do you... However, to answer your question, don't take the 12 year old. It's a bit much(the reason is self-explanatory) and I was seventeen when I went to my first concert.

Good Lord! Ya'll can be mean as hell...sometimes. I am PROUD of you too. Bein' all righteous and correct. I KNOW you will run this country well whenever I sit my **** down. That aside. You raised so many issues let me try and account fo my actions...yes, I feel I owe you an explanation. My "Mother" Style: I am the kind of mom who is tight with her college son AND all/most of his friends. I just got it like that and would not want it any other way. I was the mom that kids wanted to chaperone the dances, field trips, Grad Nite, etc. I am also the mom who will stand up for you when your mom/dad won't. I will fight to get you in honors classes, off suspension, probation and out of hot water with your parents. I am that kind of mom. I know the music, clothing, some of the speak and kids, teens, young adults talk to me about most everything because I listen. Our home is a "safe" place for you to crash or work it out. My mom and my grandmother was like this too. I don't try to be young...I am, especially at heart. I love life and have a fairly open mind. My way is not the only way. See when folks get older they get more narrow minded. This stops growth and closes you off to experiences that you just might enjoy. By the grace of God and excellent genes...I am fine. I work out, I laugh, I play and I look good because I feel good and I try not to let nothin' worry me. My husband, family and friends like that about me. I lift them up which is hard at times but heck...why not. I play baseball, rollerskate, play basketball down at the park and I love it. What's not to like? I ain't bothern nobody. As A Woman: Good grief. I have 3 progressive degrees 4 total degreees. A BA, MBA, MPA and a PhD. That ain't me. That is what I had to do to do what I do. I done been on over 100 comissions, boards, in organizations and blah, blah, blah...snore... So many of my friends, mothers like myself have not moved off all that. That as a presentation of me day in and day out...naw. Only when necessary...usually when dealin' with white folks or stuck up black folks. I am published so when "net" I relax and I do my thing cause this is my fun not my work. I am a responsible, accountable and fine upstanding woman. You done seen me in Jet, Ebony, Black Enterprise and mo... SO.... I thank you for your candor, honesty and inquiry. I am simply a lady who has many many different aspects to her one of which includes her son and her neices. Son gets to pick this ONE outfit because mom(me) gets to pick the outfit that he must wear when we go to the ballet ONCE a year. You see...yet another piece of me that makes you go hmmm. That is how we got to Summer Jam and how I continued to get him to go with me once a year to the ballet...compromise that turns out to be a fun tradition that we hope to continue. Now don't think for a minute that partner is spending too much time with mom...he like ya'll in that sense. He does like and dislike that his moms is a "stunna". Don't hate...please. The Decision: I will leave the 12 year old at home and go from there. I welcome more comments.

Son is now 19 years old. We missed a year because they had to cancel it because, well, you know... Rod: I have not heard every or even most 50 cent or Lil Jon songs. I am under the impression that I would hear "get low" and "da club". I can tell that I just might need to actually listen to more than the top 2 hits for these "artist". You raise a good point. I never heard of the songs you call out. I have to admit I do like Lil Jon. Some of his songs get me ready for some work meetings that I have to have...it works... I am a woman, a black woman, a high ranking smart black woman who works in a very white dominated field. Lil Jon is my other "work coach." 10 year old was when son said "no" to the Ballet. I had to get creative and it worked. Now you gotta remember 9 or ten years ago Summer Jam had maybe Johnny Gill, that group of boys that sang "jump-jump" and at the most Salt-n-Peppa. Music was not then what it is now. Besides he had his game boy and a few of his friends who were also 10 years old and all they did was run around and roll around on the grass... It really was not that big a deal back then. Now, over the years and as he grew things changed but so did we. Lady J: I am sworn to my son and self that I will never post what HBCU he attends. I can write and talk about him till the cows come home but his name and other facts are not for the internet. Thats not too much to ask. Now, back to the concert talk...
