It simply a shame to admit it, but black americans (and plenty of other blacks around the world for that matter) are in a horrible predicament. The "sympotoms" that you all are describing are the result of our callous history here in america. I think that blacks are responding to the mistreatment in a deppressed manner. THIS IS OUR MAIN PROBLEM!!!
>> LOW SELF ESTEEM & PRIDE - we find that we are unable to be proud of the same things as white families (financial prosperity, livable surroundings, numerous excellent institutions of education, etc.), so we invent a world of materialism and consumptionism in order to make up for our social lacking. this is why we begin to degenrate toward flashy clothes, jewelry and cars. like ****, they temporarily soothe the pain that springs from the dogmatically belived notion that we are inferior and therefore should aim for other lower things in life. (Examples of this notion are apparent in the black belief that "standard engilsh" is synonymous with "selling out" or not being "down" seeing as how we tend to think that we are not meant to speak English on a level that is considered "educated". lots of blacks dont value education, so why value educated speech?).
SOLUTIONS:
>> racial/human pride should be promoted among young blacks (not the type that spurs hatred, but the type that spurs confidence and understanding of the self.).
>>more should be done by BLACKS to establish and maintain control of our own public/private instituions (i.e., hospitals, schools, businesses, etc).
>>GET RID OF BET!!!!!!!!! and start the Hip Hop Reformation/Renassaince!! lol
Peace...
Basically what everyone else is saying. We need to set our priorites straight first. I see too many people with rims on busted up cars, or have on new clothes with dirty, old teeth in they mouth. And too many black people wanna be what they see on TV. Not all of us are gonna be rappers or pro sport stars. Have a back up plan in life in case you first your first plan don't fall through. And we need to stop wanting to be THUGS. That is nothing to be proud of and we also need to start taking education more seriously. It's nothing the world fears more than a person with knowledge.
I agree!!!
Fellas: If you are in college you are not, I repeat, you are NOT a ****!!! Thugs don't go to college, they run wild in the streets and eventually end up behind bars.....that is not an ideal life.
Ladies: Wearing your underwear as if it is an outfit suitable for public display is not, I repeat, is NOT cute....in fact, it's dumb. You are not a "video girl"......you're a lady. Self-respect dictates to come outside of you house presentable.
I think the problem with young people idolizing the people they see on TV is that some forget that they are not real. People in the industry produce an image that they can sell. You do not know Jay Z or Lil John personally. Why idolize someone you don't know on a personal level and will never meet.
I also blame some of the older generations that are slowly leaving us young adults with no one to look up to, and us young adults who are doing the same to our younger generations. You can't look up to a father that isn't there (fellas). You can't look up to a mother that doesn't respect herself as a woman (ladies). So now young people turn to the TV instead of their own community. It's a cycle

I agree with you as well. One of the main problems is our lack of positive role models in our faces. The Black family is practically inexistent now, and blacks in the media don't really act in ways that should inspire young people to want to follow them. As far as I am concerned, the only young black man I look up to is P, Russell as well. They made it to the top and didn't have to hustle crack to get there. Big ups to P. Diddy...wit his dancin' a$$. And Russell wit his...uhm.....whateva.

no offense taken love, but to answer your question; as analytical and down right nosy as i am, i'd like to start my own practice in psychology and serve my people right here in LA...if i dont take the business route, then i can see myself writing books or teaching at a black college.

P. Diddy does his thing. I was with Russell Simmons right up until he sold his clothing company

Not only that we all arent going to be rappers and sport players, it's that we WANT to be all that. Its the lazy way out. Look at a game, how many more black basketball players do you think we need? Now look on TV. How many more Black leaders, doctors, lawyers, CEOs do we need? Put down the basketball and pick up a daggon book.
lack of respect for the family unit
black men: will impregnate anybody, but wont take of the responsibilty
black women: will lay down with any man, even if she knows he wont take care of the children
start my own practice in psychology and serve my people right here in LA...
...I think you stole my idea....lol nah, i'm just playing. I figure i'd get my Ph.d and practice clinical pyschology for a while to accumulate my funds, then start a program that help inner-city schoolteachers. I dont think teachers are prepared to deal with the problems students go through. It is has been proven that if a teacher encourages the students "pychologically" the students perform better. Basically, if the teachers play with the students minds a little. Like telling them that they are all gifted or something...when kids think they're gifted (on average) those students tend to perfom on a more gifted level. If teachers believe that students are smart, they will treat them like their smart and encourage them more. when kids think they are smart, they actually perform at a higher level. In due time, the children are actually smarter.....in pyschology, its known as the "self-fulfilling prophecy"
only problem is LA is getting on my nerves, i am not sure if I want to start my program there or in some another 'hood.

LOL...nowadays, i have to go off encouragement from family and friends cuz thh teachers dont really care to groom us! LAUSD ****!
