When you GDI's say that you are doing research, what are some of the things that you are looking for HERE on HBCUconnect as opposed to the official site and individual chapter websites of various GLO's?
My nephew just let me know this topic had been reactivated to show me that I don't know what I am talking about when I give him "advice". There are many Greeks in his family and we are baffled by all this new stuff. Back in the day. you went to the interest meeting, wrote your letter of interest and waited to hear back. You got a letter saying you were accepted or rejected, for example ,because you did not have the required GPA. If you were accepted you went to the meeting where you were told the cost, length of "pledging". met the DP, etc. You did not have to "know or do" anything before that time. You learned everything you needed to know AFTER you were accepted. Which is why I don't get the need to research and know the protocol before that time. Why learn all about history, founders, etc. BEFORE you you know if you are going to be accepted or not ? I told him he did not need to do anything UNTIL he gets something in writing saying yes, come to room 220 at 8 pm on this date for more information. He says I am wrong and it appears he MAY be right.Is this like "pre pledging" for lack of a better term because pledging has been banned by National .
Well your nephew is indeed correct. I would not jump to call this pre pledging at all. It is merely on the basis that if one wants to join ANYTHING be it a Fraternity or sorority, college, law school whatever you SHOULD have done some type of research to cover your basis on WHY you want to someday attach your name to this organization. People should never make any life decision with out knowing why they want to join and basic information on it. The fact of the matter is that there is so much more information available via the web, books etc. that are offered now in comparison to the LACK of such information in the past which is why we expect more from our prospects today. Times have defiantly changed. There is still ALOT of information that prospects would not find on the web and those are specifically introduced and strengthened through the actual process. Alot also depends on the school/institution that you go to. For example in some majority white institutions where the divine nine is not as prevalent as in an HBCU it is somewhat commonplace for interests to be a bit more naive on the process and historical information prior to becoming a member. You will notice (if you havent already) that at HBCU's we tend to take greek life ALOT more serious than PWI's.
I agree wth everything you said. I attended a HBCU and I know how serious it is. I agree there is more information available than ever and yes, you should know the basics. People also make decisions by how they view chapters/ members on their campus, reputations/ stereotypes of organizations or family tradition, etc. What I don't see is,studying, being tested, grilled ( like pledging) without knowing if you're going to be "one". What do you do with all that knowledge if you are not chosen, other than be ****. Seems like system where kids can be misled,used and abused all for naught.

This may be true. Now, In terms of a prospect wanting to know information it should be self fulfilling not merely self gaining. Generally, it is always best to know information and not have an opportunity than to have an opportunity and not know. Finally, keep in mind that prospects haze them self. The fact of the matter is that gaining membership into a BGLO is NOT a right but instead a privilege...some get it, some don’t...simple as that. Most will be disappointed, some won’t. Preparation is key.
