The FAMU Rattlers' first win this season was overshadowed by a scuffle that broke out between football players from Howard University and the Marching 100 at Bragg Stadium Saturday night. According to Dr. Julian White, Director of the Marching 100, there was nearly four minutes left on the clock when the band was finishing their performance. Dr. White was standing in the end zone when he saw some members of the Howard football team cut through the bands' formation.
"I said I should get over there because this could be a problem." White said.
On his way over to the band, White says he was pushed. He also heard members of the band and the Howard football team exchanging words.
"I heard band members telling them to get off the field, and some Howard players were using expletives." A brief altercation then ensued, and several spectators hopped over the protective railing onto the field.
As police officers attempted to gain control of the situation, some spectators began throwing bottles onto the field.
Game officials later made the decision to have the teams switch sides to avoid further conflicts, and several Howard fans who were sitting in the student side of the stadium were relocated.
Shaun West, head drum major for the Marching 100 said the band does not advocate **** or stand for unruliness and Saturday's scuffle was due to a lack of respect.
"Last night the incident was sparked by the rudeness and lack of integrity by the Howard football team. They really displayed a horrible show of conduct on their behalf and provoked the band members."

How my friends tell the story, the band just KEPT playing, and they only had like less than 5 minutes to prep for the second half... and then the football team cut rank (always a dumb thing).. then the band members got hostile.. and were flippin' over the HU water containers, and like.. owuldn't move... Trust, no water coolers were flipped over...maybe during the scuffle, but not before.
The situation could've been worse. Students were ready to jump from the stands.
The HU/FAMU has been on for a min esp. the last couple of years.
Let's back track for a min.
Fall '02- Howard@FAMU, Band ends halftime the same way they did this year. Howard football team stretches in the end zone and waits for the band to get off the field.
Fall '03- Howard's Homecoming vs FAMU, Fight ensues in locker room afterwards over allegations of cheating.
Spring '05 (basketball)- Howard's starting C tries to start a fight with 2 females, who are on the Strike Team, at halftime of the men's b-ball game. Then tries to fight the crowd after the game.
Fall '05- Howard football players cut ranks and pushes the "Marching 100" band director, fight ensues. Sides are switched, FAMU football team gets amped to be on student side again.
I sat right behind the bench at the game, and you don't try to start a fight with someone at a visiting school. You wont win no matter how hard you think you are. #81 was whining the entire game about they shouldn't be losing. For all you haters out there doubting the Rattler football team, YOU'RENEXT
TSU u got your chance Sat. and besides TSU or Nashville is not that hard.
