To ALL greeks...Question about "discretion"... Posted on 11-18-2005

Hi Everyone, This is my first time posting something on HBCU-Connect, I am somewhat of a "lurker" LOL! But anyway, I had a question/comment that has really been burning in my mind since I started school at FAMU in the fall...Why is there such thing as "legacy" because most times when your parent is in a BGLO they sort of "breed" you to become a member, and that makes it REALLY hard for kids when they start college because they are not supposed to act like they are interested in ANYTHING as apart of the whole "discretion" thing. That is why I sorta wish I wasn't exposed at such a young age because it seems so backwards... parents instill things in your mind from when u r 1, put "future XYZ" shirts on you at 5, put u in fashionetta in middle school, keep u in the "teen" program all throughout high school and then u are a debutante your senior year, THEN to top it all off u get a scholarship sponsered by XYZ, and THEN ALL OF SUDDEN u are supposed to forget everything and act stupid like you don't know what u want to be. I really don't UNDERSTAND that! CAN SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN IT TO ME!!

Regardless of who your parents are, and what groups u were in growing up, the fact of the matter is...you are in a new place, with new people, and in a new environment. If a parent brought their child up to believe that once they get into college they are a guaranteed member, then shame on them. Becuz the fact of the matter is that not all BGLOs have a legacy clause, so if a prospect does not fulfill the requirements or if the members don't think he/she suits their org, then they hold the choice to reject them. If someone goes around telling everyone "Hey, i'm gonna be a blah blah blah!", guess what...that person is gonna look like a fool when they don't end up making it. So it seems to me as though being discrete would be the logical way to go. Discretion also speaks volumes about your character. If you can't hold in something as simple as what org u want to join, then how are u going to hold serious and valuable info once u are an actual member?

THANKS!! I really get what U R saying, I think I am starting to understand now...and as I said B4 I don't want ANYONE to get the WRONG idea. I do not rep XYZ teens and I am not going around saying my mother is XYZ my father is ABC and I am gonna be XYZ, I just wanted to know why the whole "discretion" thing existed but the comment by Blutifully Human "If you can't hold in something as simple as what org u want to join, then how are u going to hold serious and valuable info once u are an actual member?" really helped me out. THANKS GUYS!

I'm not greek. But I do understand b/c I have alot of greeks in my fam. U just HAVE to use discretion. I hear some people at my school doing what we call label dropping. It just makes them sound crazy. Maybe discretion isn't a problem for me b/c my family never presented me as a "future whatever". They earned their letters so they knew I,along with others in fam, had to do the same (if thats something we even wanted). From what I have experienced, GREEKS COULD CARE LESS IF YOUR A LEGACY. YOU HAVE TO EARN YOUR PLACE LIKE EVERYONE ELSE. But again I'm not greek.Good luck!
