I don't hate/dislike greeks just this ONE question and NO ONE WILL ANSWER :???: and maybe all of you don't do it, but i know a chapter of a good amount of devine nine greeks that have been kicked off the yard for physical hazing......so dont try to pretend like it doesn't happen :x NOW GREEKS....the floor is yours........
Real Talk... Not trying to get at you sideways but understand you are a stranger asking a somewhat serious question over the internet. You could be asking something as simple as "Why is the sky blue?" but don't be suprised if nobody feels obligated to answer because to the vast majority you are nameless individual who is trying to find out something where the answers you'll find will be the same if not better in a simple google on the history of hazing. Also what is the purpose/intent of your question? How will it affect your life if I or somebody else chooses to sit down and really answer your question? (these aren't rhetorical questions btw) Anyway... on some real stuff you are going to hear a million and one different answers as to why greeks haze and some real stuff these days you'll probably run into a few greeks who don't really know themselves. Personally, I think you need to rephrase your question to "Why does hazing exist at all"... ...whether it is in the military, sports, the band, clubs, school, police force, church, whatever it goes well beyond fraternities and can be found throughout the world and its history. In some cultures its looked down upon, in many others whats considered hazing is very much a part of their rites of passage. The definition of hazing usually tends to be pretty broad and can be twisted in favor of a lot of things to the point where going to class everyday, taking test, answering questions that i really don't feel like answering could be stretched into a form of hazing if I wanted to by some definitions. [edited] I had typed more... but i'mma save it and post it later. I want to see where this goes first.

Hazing is what you make it. Hell, blindfolding is considered hazing. You could say that "Making the Band" and "Ultimate Hustler" features alot of hazing. Im gonna say this......If you're in a secret society, would you just let ANYBODY in it? Wouldn't you make them earn it? You could say you're not going to haze them, but instead make them earn it. However you make the aspirant earn their membership, it can be twisted in to being called hazing. Hazing has the biggest gray area when trying to identify it. Watch what you ask.

But i feel as if physical hazing is not the "best" way in choosing who should be in an organization, whether it be greek, band or otherwise. i mean, this only the strong survive mentality wouldn't neccesarily pick the best people. maybe they'll take serious punishment and want it that bad, but might be jackasses bring the organization and/or the organizations image down. ........though i wouldn't know because i am not and have not pledged anything,...thats how i feel. i have talked to greeks and none greeks about the issue and have gotten diff. opinions from both sides. if its too touchy for the greeks here.....thats fine... if somebody says so then i would leave it alone. now, why do i want to know? though i do not have aspirations to be a greek, i still respect them. but just on a purely intellectual basis, i just wanted to see what others thought about something that intrigued me and i don't agree with. i have an open mind..... maybe you know something i don't? but what do i know anyways.......... :???: (and so what if i mess up on my spellings, have had spell check since 7th grade....it has to have some negative effects :? ).

Alot of stuff has been thrown into various processes over the years and i'm sure many who are greek will agree that much of it is unecessary. Unfortunately what tends to happen is people who aren't brought in the "right way"* continue to bring other folk in the same way they were. *the "Right way" differs for different people but who am I to judge whats right in another man's eye. However, don't get it twisted... I'm a strong advocate of some sort of a structured process. Like you'll hear many say... Greek life is a priviledge and I don't know how deep other fraternities are but Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia goes deeper than the Marianas Trench and because of that I'm sho ain't gonna let just anybody get up in my organization... thats real. However, the weeding out process should start long before the process begins not too mention asswoopings are not an effective indicator of character. A good process accomplishes a few things but for the most part it should teach one to appreciate their organization and also is a bonding process for the group of individuals going through together. Let it be known that I do believe a process should teach lessons and instill things that will last a lifetime... as opposed to leaving a person with scars that will lifetime. If it ever reaches the point where peoples lives and health are in danger then there is a problem but in the same breath the individual willing to set their manhood/womanhood aside to let those things happen to them is at fault too because at any point in time they could simply choose to stop (or buck back lol). Anyway... all things aside. At the end of the day the type of man/woman you are is all that matters... greek or not. Also not getting on you TDX in particular but I wish that in this forum I'd see more topics like "What do you guys do for community service", "What is your purpose and do you uphold it", "How has being a member of your respective org changed you?" etc. It seems that too many people focus on the negative things which plays a very small role in the entire scheme of things and run with it on this board.
