Are you comfortable around other races? Posted on 01-02-2006

I can't tell you how many times I've heard someone say "You shouldn't go to an HBCU because the world isn't all black and you need to learn to associate with other races" so yea, like the title asks...are you comfortable around other races? or do you just tolerate them because you HAVE to?

I am more comfortable around other races sometimes than other blacks...I often wonder if I'm not "black enough" for my peers but for me it's easy to relate to other races because I attended diverse schools all my life...and when I went to mostly black schools I couldnt really fit in. So yeah, I am comfortable around both...

The salesgirl in Saks gave me an attitude too, I felt like saying, Chick I'm buying a $50 tee-shirt, the least you can do is smile. I can't wait to go back to Howard and just be me not "black me".
Hmm....maybe it's because you were only buying a $50 tee-shirt, and not a $600 dress like everybody else in there!

what i find interesting is that Blacks are supposed to be fine with being the only Black amongst a bunch of whites yet whites aren't and shouldn't be around a bunch of Blacks

I would say that I'm comfortable around other races. For the past 3 semesters, I attended a predominantly white school where the graduate program consists of mostly international students. Being in that setting has allowed me to interact with students, faculty, etc. in a number of ways, and it's allowed me to have a little more patience toward others as well. For me, it's quite interesting to get to know some of my classmates, based on how they grew up and what they're accustomed to. At first, I thought I would "tolerate them because HAVE to", but I'm glad that I'm more open-minded now.

Oh the memories. I've had similar experiences...Im comfortable among all races but naturally Im more comfortable around my own You should ask that person...Do they think all black people are the same? Because thats what they're saying when they make that comment. Everyone was askin me the same thing like "Why wont you just go to NU (Niagara University)" The funny thing is NU has 5 percent blacks....while Hampton has 5% whites....Either way Im still in a school where its a majority of one race. Doesnt matter if its my own or not

HBCU's are unrealistic in that in the real world we'll be competing with majority whites, but I still don't think that matters because if someone goes to a white school how prepared will they be to help their own out? I grew up in a town that's like 99% black. My h.s. and 2 years of my elementary schooling was diverse and all other years were 99% black. I'm going into my second semester at Howard now and ironically I'm becoming more and more comfortable around other races. My comfort level is gauged by diversity of background moreso than race. If someone has a far different background to the point where we have nothing in common than I'm likely to create an awkward moment in that I won't have anything to really say...

Hmm, I'm comfortable around other races cuz I went to a pretty diverse HS. I'm going to say it was about 40% white and 60% everything else (Mostly middle easterners & hispanics...and den blacks and asians toward the bottom). I had come from Brooklyn...so to move to a more diverse area, I had to switch it up in interests & such (music, clothes, etc.) Now coming back to a more black environment...I've switched up again. Sorta. I have my more "white" moments & my more "black moments"...to be stereotypical. I'm a blend of my previous environments now. However, when w/o black people, I feel more comfortable around other minorities before white people. But I sometimes I actually miss white environemnts & the crap that goes on...lol, the white culture...

CHS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (had to throw that one in) but yeah, since the area i live in is really diverse (for now) and i live near and go to school in a very diverse PWI i think i am...........but sometimes when im with wealthier blacks i sometimes feel out of place (too ghetto) but never usually with my own race and usually never with liberal whites who (at least around here) like us.
