White Fraternity/Sororities vs NPHC Posted on 02-26-2006

Don't know if this question has been ever posted, but this was a recent discussion in our BSU program: How do you feel (Non-Greeks) included, if a black joined a white frat or sorority. AND if they joined both NPHC & the white sorority/fraternity. I personally think (as a non-greek) that it should be fine. Not that your getting the best of both worlds- but you can (if your about it) make connections and network through both organizations- using the both white and nphc for business- but still have that cultural and familia interest. If you know what I'm saying.... what do you think? peace

First of all, if a person (white or otherwise) is already a member of an IFC or NPC frat/sorority, they cannot join an NPHC frat/sorority, and vice versa.
Actually, at the University I attend (not HBCU) females that are in NPC sorority's can join NPHC sorority's and vice versa. I'm not sure about males but I'm pretty sure its the same.
How so? Give us a concrete example. For many BGLO's if you hold membership in any social greek letter organization, you will not be allowed to join. And if you do slip through the cracks and they find out, you can be expelled from that organization. I hope you're not getting IFC/PHC orgs mixed up with honorary organizations or social fellowships that sometimes pledge like KK Psi, Phi Mu Alpha, Pershing Rifles, Beta Nu Rho, etc...
Actually, the "honorary" in the formal name of my org does not have the usual connotation; here it refers to the fact that it is an "honor to be selected to serve". Although we are not a social but a service org, we do have a MIP process just as most other GLOs. There is no shortcut (or back door) into the Psi...

Go back a few pages and you'll find that it was already a topic made about that.

I am a Proud Member of Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity Inc It. and also a Proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. I don't see the issue with a White Fraternity. I'm in a unique perspective because not only is Alpha Phi Omega is a white fraternity but it also is a co-ed fraternity so it has male and female members as well. But I pledged Mississippi Valley State University while in undergrad and the other chapter's around us Grambling,Dillard, Jackson State are all black so we really don't see the white and the female fraternity members until we would go to Regionals or Nationals. So if you wen't to any of pur chapters at are at HBCU'S you wouldn't even think they we was an White Fratenity. I guess it depends on where your at I guess.
