Hampton or Spelman? Posted on 03-20-2006
Imaginelyfe06

Yes...I know the decision is mines but ya girl needs some insight....all the info I can get.. I've been accepted into both schools....Spelman was always my first choice but I LOVED Hampton when I visited the campus and they became my second. Originally Howard was my second but I didnt like the environment when I visited the campus so I didnt even bother to apply. I live in New York State- 12 hour drive to Hampton, 20 hours to Spelman I've never been to Spelman before so I dont want to accept and wind up in the "howard" situation where I didnt like the environment. Spelbound is April 2-3 and they want an rsvp by march 28....thats 8 days...mind u I got my acceptance letter today. Hamptons highschool day is april 7. I was planning on going but now that I got into Spelman I dont know. We were going to drive to Hampton...but we'll have to fly to Spelman...money is kind of scarce *I dont know what I want to major in *I hear I have some family in Virginia 30 minutes from hampton, I dont know them but Ihear they are real nice folks. *They're like the same price, and neither school has really offered me anything yet. ----------------------------------------- from a college students experience and from what you know about the schools? What would you do if you were in my situation.

well of course you're quite familiar with spelman; you're from the south; which makes you slightly biased. i didn't even know/hadn't heard a thing about spelman until my junior year of high school, but i've been familiar with hampton since elementary school... and the school you graduate from DOES impact where you get a job; maybe more so with graduate school; but you can't say that your undergraduate school doesn't have any effect on the type of job you'll get. if i were an employer, and two equally qualified people were applying for a position; (same test scores, same everything)... hey... i'd generally be more apt towards choosing the candidate from the bigger name school; maybe that's just me.
I guess I could say the same thing, coming from the south, I've never in my life heard of Hampton until I actually started researching HBCU's a few years ago...the only one's I've ALWAYS heard of were Morehouse, Spelman, Tuskegee, and Grambling...I didn't learn about Howard until freshman year

What are you planning on majoring in? I would pick Spelman because there is a lot to do in Atlanta when you are not doing your schoolwork and you can get some really good internships in Atlanta depending on your major which could eventually lead to a job. Hampton, there's not as many job internships/opportunities there.

lol, who's from the South? I was born and raised in PG County, Maryland and I didn't hear about Hampton until well into high school. What undergrad school you go to definitely has VERY LITTLE impact. Unless your talking about an Ivy Leaugue school, most employers really don't care what school you went to as long as its accredited and you did well. But even if it did, guess what, odds are the person interviewing you is gonna be white, so whether it says Hampton or Spelman, the only thing that's gonna be in their mind is that you went to an HBCU and in most of their minds, all HBCUs are the same. And when you get out in the working world, you'll realize that no two people are ever equally qualified for a job. Someone always has an edge. No one has the same everything. Even if the people are the same on paper, someone will perform better on the interview or assesment or whatever. I'm not saying school name doesn't matter at all, I'm saying that IT IS VERY RARELY the deciding factor on who gets the job. Plus with Spelman, you not only have access to the other AUC schools (Morehouse and Clark-Atlanta), you can do joint programs with Georgia Tech and Georgia State as well. And Emory University is right there as well. So as far academic opportunities, Atlanta, GA has Hampton, VA beat

I was simply saying that what school you go to has very little impact, you were saying I said it had none, which is not the case. I wasn't comparing Atlanta and Hampton. I was talking about Spelman and the other schools that are connected to it academically. lol, you were the one that started off by saying Hampton was a bigger name school and coming with absolutely nothing to back that up. Differences of opinion are great, but always come with something to support that opinion. I will give you this, Hampton is a bigger school that Spelman in terms of campus size, student body/faculty size, and the number of majors and stuff you have to choose from (it is a university), but as far as in name or name recognition, that one's definitely up to debate.

Hey I think you should go to the school that you feel benefits you as a person; I go to Morehouse and I have a bias opinion because Spelman is one of Morehouse's sister schools and we do EVERYTHING together. But in the end, no one's opinion will matter..it's all up on you and which environment or school will get you to where you want to go...letting other people decided for you will cause you not to have a choice and make you miserable in the end....what other schools are you looking at? I hope all goes well with your selection...

Atlanta has Spleman al l girls school Morehouse all boys school like the otha girl said unless you arent straight why go be around a bunch of females All the time? I had to think about Spelman again too and SPelman and Hampton I heard o f both I heard about Spelman because of Aunt and Boyz N tha Hood. Hampton always knew about it family memebers attended it I myself have visited the campus and my friend Sharell goes to Spelman she tells me its okay in Atlanta and that they krunk it up to be more than what it is. ATlanta is good for Most owned Black businesses and all but you can have the same oppourtunity in Virginia and its neighbor Washington DC and not to mention good ol NYC right up the there too ATlanta has good sports teams and clubs when I went down there it was fun! but it wasnt really no bigg difference from when I went to Chicago or NYC Laura sweetie go to both the schools and see for ya self u said u already been to hampton and u got family not only that u said u only 12 hrs thats a lot less than 20 and cheaper too think. what bout coming home and commuting u want to spend money like that? Spelman is Well named school but Ive heard of Hampton before Spelman thats only cuz I live near it I personally would choose Hampton thats just me cuz I couldnt see myself being that far away from home 20 hrs? um nah not by myself and not only that I just can't be around a bunch of females though u have an all boyz school? hmm i dont know Id rather go Coed atleast u know wahts going on lol Atlanta is a fun city and its home to the people that live there and it along with Miami and New orleans is the only big city scene that the Rural south really get Hampton is hott and its stuiff to do and if you feel there isnt transfer on over to Atlanta or go to Atl and transfer to HAmtpon I like Howard over both anyway but if I was you based on your location and money I would go closer to home like HU thats just me but its u so u have to choose which is best for you there is also Cheyney in PA which isnt by far or try some MD schools if its an HBCU u lookin for again I would choose Hampton based on your situations Spelman is in Atlanta and its supposedly always Krunk and non stop fun in ATL and fun all the time thats what they say it was fun but I think some people exaggerated it to be more than what it is. its not Atlanta Vs Hampton thats stupid cuz a small city liek hampton can't compare to ATL now u combined HU with its surrounding cities u got more than u can handle Spelman graduate or Hampton graduate its still an HBCU depicting on your major of choice and what u feel is better for you Spelman or Hampton? base it on your circumstances, your likes and things and enviorment u are comfortable with look at their majors thats the most important thing Spelman offers alot u just got to weigh out your options and choose and in the end u choose whats in your gut trust it! Im like NAsty NAs on illmatic track 9 I represent represent Va all day! http://www.xanga.com/poetikbuty_nva

What kind of an ignorant comment is that? So every girl who wants to go to Spelman and does go must be a lesbian or have lesbian tendencies right? I hate when people always bring up the fact that Spelman is an all girls school as a negative thing. Obviously if you think its that serious, you've never been there. We are not constantly surrounded by nothing but girls. There are males on campus all day and we have visitation in the evenings and on the weekends.
