Irwinville VFD charged with arson
March 4, 2008
Irwinville- Six South Georgia firefighters are charged with arson for setting several fires.
All five firemen at the Irwinville Volunteer Fire department and their chief are charged with torching houses, cars, and setting brush fires. The most amazing part, investigators say they did it so they could rush to the fires in their new fire truck. **C Nels commentary..."Forget a fire, check out our pimped out ride!" **
Word spread like wildfire through Irwinville that the entire six man volunteer fire department was arrested.
"It's in a way shocking, a but in a way it's not," said Stacy Cleveland, Irwin County resident.
"It just surprises me I guess. I wasn't expecting nothing like that to happen," said Ed Collins, Irwinville resident.
The fires started in April of last year.
"It actually stared out with some of the grass fires on Crystal Lake, every other day we were responding and the Irwinville fire department was getting called out every other day to grass fires at Crystal Lake," said Sgt. Tammy Champion, Irwin County Sheriff's Office.
It got gutsier when they used an **** gas mixture to set a now demolished vacant home at the corner of Big Creek and Eisenhower Roads. They also asked permission to use this vacant home at 926 Fillmore Road for practice, but when the owner refused, they set it on fire anyway two weeks ago Saturday. They got caught when investigators realized it was volunteer fire fighters calling 911.
"Tracking it back and pulling the 911 tapes, a couple of volunteer firemen have called on several different fires," said Champion.
Why would firefighters intentionally set fires?
"Two guys actually admitted they called it in, after they set the fire and hurried back as fast as they could to the station so they could ride on the truck to go put it out. So, excitement, new truck," said Champion.
If they hadn't been stopped, both residents and investigators wonder what might have been next?
"I'm worried that they're going to find more **** like the law enforcement and that it's going to stem into bigger and higher places," said Cleveland.
For now, volunteer fire fighters seven miles away in Waterloo will protect the residents of Irwinville.
A total of eight people are charged in this case. They are, Fire Chief Rusty Thomas, Firefighter Eric Cowart, Firefighter Roy Brown, Firefighter Justin McCurdy, Firefighter Daniel Spires, Firefighter Joe Maye.
Fire Chief Rusty Thomas' ex-girlfriend Sandy Mobley is charged with one count of party to a crime because she was there as fire fighters planned to set one of the fires and then rode with them to the fire in the truck.
Kevin Burton is not a fire fighter, but was with a fire fighter when they set the vehicle fire on Crystal Lake Road.

Golfer apologizes for shot that **** protected hawk
Published: March 06, 2008
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Pro golfer Tripp Isenhour apologized for killing a hawk that was making noise while he tried to film a TV show. Now the Humane Society wants the PGA Tour to take action.
``Because of the high profile nature of this case, the PGA needs to take steps to address its interest and to make it clear that they don't condone animal cruelty,'' said Dale Bartlett, the deputy manager for animal cruelty issues for the Humane Society of the United States.
Bartlett said the organization would contact the PGA Tour on Friday to discuss the issue.
Isenhour, who plays on the developmental Nationwide Tour, was charged Wednesday with cruelty to animals and killing a migratory bird, misdemeanors that carry a maximum penalty of 14 months in jail and $1,500 in fines.
Isenhour quickly apologized Thursday.
``As soon as this happened, I was mortified and extremely upset and continue to be upset,'' Isenhour said in a statement issued through his management company, SFX Golf. ``I want to let everyone know there was neither any malice nor deliberate intent whatsoever to hit or harm the hawk. I was trying to simply scare it into flying away.''
The 39-year-old player, whose real name is John Henry Isenhour III, became angry while filming ``Shoot Like A Pro'' on Dec. 12 at the Grand Cypress Golf Club when a squawking red-shouldered hawk roughly 300 yards away forced another take.
He drove closer to the bird in his golf cart and starting hitting balls at it. The bird didn't move and Isenhour gave up and drove away.
Isenhour started again when the hawk moved within about 75 yards, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officer Brian Baine indicated in a report.
Isenhour allegedly said, ``I'll get him now,'' and aimed for the hawk.
``About the sixth ball came very near the bird's head, and (Isenhour) was very excited that it was so close,'' Baine wrote.
A few shots later, witnesses said he hit the hawk. The bird, protected as a migratory species, fell to the ground bleeding from both nostrils.
Bartlett said Isenhour's case, like the Michael Vick dog fighting case, is disappointing for society.
``We look up to professional athletes and we want them to reflect the best of us as a society and I think we're appalled when it turns out they instead reflect some of the very worst attributes,'' he said in a phone interview Thursday night.
Isenhour said he is an animal lover and his family has adopted three cats from a local shelter.
``We ask that everyone accept my sincerest apology, and please be respectful of my family's privacy,'' he said.
Isenhour has won four times on the Nationwide Tour, including twice in 2006. The former Georgia Tech star has played three events this year on the tour the last a 36th-place tie two weeks ago in the Moonah Classic in Australia.

Deborah Jeane Palfrey was convicted of running prostitution ring
Service reportedly had list of high-powered Washington clients
(CNN) -- Deborah Jeane Palfrey, known as the "D.C. Madam," was found **** in Florida Thursday, according to Tarpon Springs police.
Her mother identified the body, police said.
**** notes were found near the body in a small storage shed next to a mobile home, police said.
Palfrey, 52, was reportedly staying at the home of her mother, who owns the property where the body was found, police said.
The Pinellas County Medical Examiner's Office will determine the cause of death, police said.
The county sheriff's office and the FBI are participating in the investigation.
"I am devastated to hear about this," Palfrey lawyer Montgomery Blair Sibley told CNN by phone. "If it turns out to be true it is a tragic loss of life."
Palfrey was convicted last month in connection with a high-end prostitution ring catering to Washington's elite.
She was found guilty April 15 of money laundering, racketeering and mail fraud and faced a maximum 55-year prison term at her sentencing, which was scheduled for July 24.
A spokesman for the U.S. Attorneys Office in Washington, which prosecuted Palfrey, declined to comment.
Prosecutors estimated the sentence she would have likely received would have been between 57-71 months, about six years, due to sentencing guidelines and other factors that would have been taken into account.
At least one lawmaker, Louisiana Sen. David Vitter, a Republican, turned up in the phone records of her business, Pamela Martin & Associates.
State Department official Randall Tobias resigned in May 2007 after confirming he patronized Palfrey's business.
She argued it was a legitimate, legal escort service.

More talking, more problems: 'Cell phone elbow' damages nerves(CNN) -- If your pinkie and ring fingers tingle or feel numb, you might not want to pick up that cell phone to call the doctor.
Too much cell phone use can lead to overextending nerves, causing what doctors call "cell phone elbow."
Orthopedic specialists are reporting cases of "cell phone elbow," in which patients damage an essential nerve in their arm by bending their elbows too tightly for too long.
When cell phone users hold the phone to their ears, they stretch a nerve that extends underneath the funny bone and controls the smallest fingers. When talkers chat for a long time in that position, it "chokes the blood supply to the nerves. It makes the nerves short-circuit. The next thing you know, there's tingling in the ring and small finger," said Dr. Peter J. Evans, the director of the Hand and Upper Extremity Center at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.
When that happens, the advice is simple: Switch hands -- before it gets worse.
People who have this condition, called cubital tunnel syndrome, can feel weakness in their hands and have difficulty opening jars or playing musical instruments.
"It could impede your typing ability, your writing ability," Evans said. "People get very unintelligible writing if it gets severe."

Two good Samaritans returned more than $275,000 that tumbled out of an improperly secured armored truck in Syracuse, New York, last week. But some not-so-good Samaritans seem to have walked away with another $60,000 that fell onto the street.
An armored truck inadvertently strewed bags of money on the ground in front of the Syracuse Antiques Exchange.
A Brinks armored truck inadvertently strewed more than a dozen bags of money on the ground in front of the Syracuse Antiques Exchange on Friday, according to Sgt. Tom Connellan of the Syracuse police department.
The bags slipped out of an open door on the side of the truck. Apparently oblivious, the driver proceeded to his intended destination, a Brinks facility a few blocks away.
David Jenks, the owner of the antiques shop, and Hanson Herring, who had just gotten a haircut at a nearby barbershop, Cuttin Up, were the first to approach the bags.
Herring said at first he thought the bags merely contained garbage. Only when he began to inspect one did he realize, "Oh man, this is money."
The money was in all different denominations, from coins to $100 bills.
The two men then began to round up the bags and load them into plastic postal bins. Tim Taylor, an off-duty Syracuse police officer who happened to be browsing in Jenks' antiques shop, assisted them.
As word spread that hundreds of thousands of dollars lay in the street, people streamed out of passing cars and adjacent businesses. For the most part the gatherers cooperated in the recovery effort.
Herring attributed the crowd's willingness to turn over the money -- rather than run away with it -- to his imposing stature. "Had I not been the size I was, it might have went a different way."
One man did display some reluctance to part with the bag he found. But Herring said that with a few words, he was able to persuade the man to release his grip on it.
All told, the men recovered $276,160 divided among 14 bags.
But two bags containing some $60,000 are still missing.
Police said it remains unclear whether the missing bags fell from the truck at an earlier point along its route, or whether someone at the scene of the main spill managed to discreetly slip away with them.
Connellan noted that it is grand larceny, a felony, to keep a sack of money one chances upon. "We tip our hats to the people who did the right thing," he said.
As for the Brinks Co., Herring said it rewarded him with a T-shirt and a gold coin commemorating the company's 150th anniversary.
Brinks did not return calls for comment.

All they rewarded him with was a T-Shirt and a coin?! I would have had second thoughts about returning it.
