Should we have followed Marcus Garvey plan??? Posted on 07-12-2004
what's_on_my_mind

Marcus Garvey was a smart but stubborn man.... in the late 1800's and early 1900's...Mr. Garvey stood tall, strong, and poised against movements of Booker T. Washington, WEB DuBois, an others.... Mr. Garvey felt that people of African descent should follow his trans-African movement .....so we as an African People can live at peace away from racism and in our natural land of Africa... With Mr. Garvey's theory....he recieved many threats and bad-talk because of his thought of Africa..... However...Mr. Garvey felt this movement would help escape racism that deprive our everyday lives as African Americans and minorities in society... With this being said.. Booker T. Washington felt we should learn trade and earn the white man's respect...while Dubois believed in liberal arts education and the talented 10 percent of black folks...with these theories... Some of Booker T. Washington and DuBois theory has been inforced more than Garvey..in fact Garvey could be considered a laughing stock then... Now close to a 100 years later....I ask the question...would we have been better if we would have followed Marcus Garvey plan of returning to Africa... With all the racism.... All the trails of HBCU's recieving poor education... All the baby mama drama with black women All the drama of blacks dominating the jail system... Were our ancestors logical?? We took DuBois and Washington's advice.. we have grown..but we are still opressed....this can be seen in our everyday lives and in a government that laughs and turn it's back on black folks.... With all this being said...should we have listened to Garvey and went to Africa??? Do you all think we would be better off if we listened to him??? Please give your opinion...I will say mines later..

@Pimptight. 1) Of course native Africans **** themselves. They have been colonized the same way we have and in many ways suffer from the same hatred. I think she was trying to point that a lot of current status today can be attributed to slavery, reconstruction, Jim Crow, segregation, and the present.
Nah...alot of this dumb Sh*t can be blamed on Black folx actin' like Niggers. You can't blame slavery for yo boy gettin' shot and robbed for his car. Jim Crow didn't make Wug fight with that cat in the club and have to go to court. There are some things you can't blame on the white man, you gotta suck it up and accept responsibility for stupid actions.
I have to disagree. Believe me I am not blaming the white man or any other man our ignorant actions today. What I am saying is that if you study the past (IE slavery, Jim crow, etc..) you will most definitely see where we get the mentality we have today. Most of our problems can be traced back to then. Think about it. Our current black on black crime and light skin vs. dark skin complex can all be traced back to how we were taught to hate ourselves during slavery. Our lack of enthusiasm towards education can be traced to not being able to receive an education at all for more than half of our time in this country. These things were instilled in us long ago and have sadly been passed down from generation to generation. Now don't get me wrong I am not saying cry about this or let it stop you, simple recognize it is there and why it is there and go about what you can do to correct it.
Good point, good luck next year, u def. got a good head on ya shoulders.
