"BUYING BLACK" Posted on 10-09-2004

Hotep If you listen to Major Black Influential “Spokesman” you will continually hear a repeated message. " Buy Black and Think Black First" I just finished reading How to make Black American Better and one of the topic addressed by Tavis Smiley was that we as Blacks need to begin to think black first and buy Black. Thus, meaning if were looking for someone to clean our carpet, we should consider all of the black owned carpet cleaning companies before we considering any other racially owned business. Now, We are all consumer in this growing society and I will attest that I don't always consider "Buying BLACK" I have a problem spending money (The little I have) at a place where the lighting is dim; customer service is terrible, among other things. I am not saying all Black Business are terrible I support many here in Columbus, but I will say that there are some that I wouldn't step foot in if you paid for everything I brought. I believe that BLACK Businesses need to step up their game and as consumers we need to stop using the EXCUSE, YOU KNOW OUR PEOPLE. So, How do you feel about "BUYING BLACK AND THINKING BLACK FIRST”? Prince...

Oh blacks can afford it. They just don't know why or how they can afford it. Expand as far as grow, flourish, etc. But I guess that goes back to the whole acquiring higher knowledge about business. I'm sorry but I mean I just don't see why there should any type of explanation or justification for anyone's issues. Get an education in any form or fashion, and produce beneficial results. BOTTOM LINE.. no what if's.

True, any education is better than none at all. However, except in a few cases, I don't think just any education can match the one that you get from college, if you're seriously trying to do big things.

I mean that's really not the subject....the subject is black businesses and products geared toward african americans. And the point is that education is a requirement for success in anything that you do.

Fair enough. But I'on think focusing only on black folks is the way to go. Its just like being a black politician. If you come out the gate talking about things that pertain soley to blacks, then you're gonna Titanic with the quickness.

this is why black entertainment especially music is so huge right now. Hip hop is the biggest genre of music right now. that is because we bought black and thought black. I agree to an extent but if it is corrupt and a false advertisement of black values then f**k it.
*sorry to burst your bubble, but hiphop is the most lucrative genre of music because 70% of its consumers are White. *and also, i do not agree with most leaders of hiphop who say all that Think Black Act Black Buy Black yinyang because how many philanthropic hiphop head honchoes can you name off the top of your head? a VERY few. Russell Simmons started his own credit card company, but gives only $10,000 to the Oprah Foundation to help inner city kids, his only philanthropic endeavor of 2002? He has CARS that cost more than that.
