Is Marching Band a sport Posted on 12-31-2002
In Rod We Trust

Do any of you think that Marching Band should be considered a sport?? I am a Trombone player and low brass section leader(lieutenant) and I work my section with laps, pushups, situps, crunches, everything(and im the only girl lowbrasser, lol)...but for some reason some people think that Marching band people dont work that hard and dont consider it a sport...I believe that if a group is doing something that requires strenous practice, hard work and determination then it should be a sport...(just like cheerleading is now considered a sport, lol) so give me feedback ok

well go to this article which i received from a friend recently about cheerleading.. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/_stories/2002-04-26-cheerleading-cover.htm now in this story it states that as many as 20 STATE HIGH SCHOOL ORGANIZATIONS say that cheerleading is a sport...so im wondering why cant marching bands be considered a sporting activity when cheerleading can be by so many....lol.

Is doing pushups a sport? Is doing situps a sport? Is doing pullups a sport? No.....While a marching band is a very ATHLETIC thing to do....calling it a SPORT is outright ridiculous..... I respect all you marching band peeps out there....hell, i even saw DRUMLINE......i cannot sit here, and let you guys call this activity a sport, as athletic which you may be.
  .....BUDDY... WHERE DO U GET OFF SAYING IS PULLUPS, PUSHUPS AND SITUPS A SPORT?... AIN'T NOBODY SAY THAT THOSE EXCERISE ACTIVITIES ARE SPORTS.. THOSE ARE NOT SPORTS... WE ARE JUST SAYING THAT WE DO THE SAME THING AN ATHLETE DOES... AND WE DO... IT SHOULD BE A SPORT .... WE MAKE PLAYS.... JUST LIKE ATHLETES DO.... WE EXCERISE... LIKE ATHLETES DO..... WE PRACTICE MORE THAN AN ATHLETE DOES... AND I PLAY BASKETBALL...SO WOULDN'T U THINK I (AN ATHLETE) WOULD KNOW...ANYWAY SKIP BUDDY.... WE (THE MARCHING BAND MEMBERS) ARE UNOFFICIAL ATHLETES....WE CAN CONSIDER OURSELVES AS ATHLETE... WE DO WHAT ATHLETES DO ....THE EXCERISES ARE A PART OF THE CHARACTERISTICS THAT AN ATHLETE DOES... POINT BLANK :!:

HOLLA BACK- if they get varsity letters and get 2 eat in a sports cafe, then dammit, we should too..lol now if golf is a sport, and competitive ping pong is a sport, u know damn well that marching bands work 10 times as hard, and yes we do compete against other bands at times. sure football games help make us known but im sure theyd still be around if not for football. thus my belief that yes, marching band IS a sport.

no, i dont think its a sport. why, cause you guys are supportin the real people who play sports. i mean, being a mascot is not a sport, so how is cheerleading and band? MOST people came to see the football game, you guys are more of side acts. although, i do agree it takes hard work and determination, but you dont put points on the board

^^^ At HBCU's that statement does not apply. Everyone knows the stands are full until after half-time. And depending on how good the bands have been going throughout the game they may stay a little longer. Esp. during those 51-2 blowouts...::coughHAMPTON vs. HOWARD 2002cough::
