Fitness vs Fatness on HBCU campus Posted on 11-05-2004

I wasn't getting much response on the Yard so here One of the major issues on HBCU campuses today is fitness. As a staff member at NCCU, we are really concerned with the amount of overweight women (and by default men) on our campuses. A high-ranking female administrator once said "It seems like these young ladies don't care about their bodies. They act like it's cute to show their midriffs, even though it's often misshapen and jutting out. On top of this, they put belly rings in their navels to bring attention to it. Many of them have hips like a grown child-rearing woman. These women are going to deal with weight problems seven to eight years down the road." Those were words from a prominent woman on campus, and many of the staff and faculty feel the same way. Sometimes, I believe that we as a people give too many excuses for why we can be fat or obese, and not enough for why we should try to remain fit. We've heard about black and latino women having different body types, from other types of women. I can't argue with that, but the difference might be the chicken/hamburgers we're eating every other day. It is ironic that just last week, we had many people on this board condemning smoking, saying it leads to emphysema, heart disease and lung cancer; yet we as a community ignore overeating which can lead to ulcers, diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol.

*eatin sausage mcmuffin* maybe its just me, but i love me some mcdonalds when i do eat it on VERY rare occasions, and was HIGHLY disappointed when they took away supersize, i felt it was punishment for other people's laziness and trying to blame a company for their lack of will power, and yes i know this has nothing to do with the subject....but i am SO TIRED of fat people blaming these fast food places for their weight and such, but i dont see where any of these places FORCED them to eat anything...i mean of course you dont go to mickey d's for health, DUHHHH,walk NOT DRIVE your happy **** to subway for that ish........maybe fast food is an addiction, but just like with any addiction you dont have to buy the food, and you can help yourself,...... soooo with that said, even if all these fast food places only made salads from now on and had free gym memberships, there would be fat people, because you cant MAKE a person be healthy unless they have the tools to get over their addiction and want to help themselves........ssoooooo what should be done is, more or cheaper counseling for people dealing with weight problems(jenny craig and others is HECKA expensive for lower income individuals such as my mom) and education for the rest of us about certain food choices and such EARLY on within public schools, i know some schools cant afford health education, but even though i slept during half of my health classes during elementary and middle school i did learn what and what WASNT healthy for me early on and to eat the stuff what wasnt healthy in moderation and how to exercise and stretch properly...i guess thats why my school only had like a very few fat people .....and if i seemed insensitive, welp my mom is a bit on the heavy side, but she lost weight by not blaming others for her problems such as mcdonalds but getting in shape and taking the initiative..........all im saying is people have will power, they really should use it every now and again instead of making excuses and taking away my DAMN SUPERSIZE!....... *finishing sausage egg mcmuffin*
