Chapter 5
Chapter 5 opens with the group camped in Indian Grave Gap. Mary Ellen is being her annoying, overbearing self again, and everyone is tried, so they decided to increase their hiking pace to make it to a motel in Hiawassee, not to far from the highway. This woman, who adjoined herself to Bryson’s hiking camp, is an out of shape overachiever who thinks she knows all there is to know about hiking. Bryson and crew do NOT care much for her. Mary doesn’t think too highly of them either. At one point, they end up hitchhiking their way partially to Hiawassee, in the jalopy of lead-footed hillbillies who do not understand the virtues of abstaining from alcohol while operating a motor vehicle, leaving Mary Ellen behind to hike her way to Wherever.
The group doesn’t always camp every night, or just eat their packed food. They stop at various restaurants and motels along the way. In Hiawasse, they bunk in some small rooms and enjoy the hot food and hot water.
