**Someone will move my thread even though I INTENDED for it to be in the YARD**
It's amazing how far a person would go just to become popular at a particular college and it's even crazier at what people DO to try to stay at the top!!
How else would one explain why people go through a rigorous 6+ week process just to join an organization? Brother Hood, sisterhood? Maybe for some but the majority is seeking popularity.
Just yesterday at Tips school, SIUC, I witnessed a probate show. The "alphas", kids that claim to be men, broke out into a brawl with members of Beta Phi pi and several members of the football team.
Why else would an Alpha yell out to a group of people that they are a bunch of b*tches and won't do sh*t to them?? What did he have to gain from that??
R.E.S.P.E.C.T...
Should I mention that he got his **** whooped??
Even before the damn probate got started. Active member's pf the Frat wanted to show the crowd that they do in fact haze by throwing the pledges around and roughing them up. Guess what happed...
One of the pledges severely turned his ankle and I overheard that he may broke it. Either way he had to be carried away. Due to the injury.
He among the rest of their frat wanted to show how "they are popular" "rough", "tough" and "how no one on campus could f*ck with them"...
Is that what the sole purpose of being in an Org. is about?
Popularity? To push people down while you think you're in the "In crowd"??
At times I reevaluate this whole "GreeK" thing. I'm not saying everyone should be included but most people that pledge, more so for men, are insecure with themselves.
Why else would they try sooo damn hard to prove to the student body that they are the best on campus? You know,
"Look how DEEP we are"
"Hey look at us!! We throw the best Parties"
"We will even stroll all night and not even think about dancing with the ladies just to show our pride..."
-I found it funny that two Ques strolled all night last night ignoring all the beautiful women in the club just to dance with each other...Sorry but lol
"F*ck the Alphas..How are ya'll gonna start with 5 and end with 5..Ya'll a bunch of 'Paper B*tches'.."
- From an Outraged member of Iota Phi Theta(Not me)..He was upset at the fact the Alphas were popular but weren't REAL..Or Real like the Iotas because they infact "haze"...
This whole "greek" thing is out of control. This was not the purpose founders of each Org intended on..
Sometimes..I dont want to be apart of it anymore...
I'm not a member of a GLO, but from what I've observed I don't believe that all member of these organizations are stuck on being popular I think its the people who are NOT in the organizations who EXPECT these members to be popular and uphold a certain reputation.
For the most part when a non-greek rates GLO as far as "who is the best on campus" they will autmatically think of the amount of paties, or social activites they do, they won't say "XYZ doesn't throw too many parties but they are commited to their weekly community service efforts." So maybe its not the greeks who are caught up on this false idea of popularity maybe its the students who are on the outside looking in wishing or just hating that these members are somewhere that they have yet to reach.
I also think that the non-greeks misinterpretation of GLO amplifies this "popularity contest view," most people do not wish to go through a process just so they can wear the colors and have instant popularity(although some do just that), for the most part its a deep connection to the organization and its principles that motivate one's decision to pursue and organization. A commited member attends meetings, offers insight, ideas, set up programs for students on campus, as well community service, attend conferences, and are a leading example in their community as well as on campus, do you HONESTLY think that people will saccrifice so much of their free time with these activities which can be extremelystressul, and time consuming just so everyone can know their name? [-X
Gotta Agree with you there. You got some good points. I know i dont do over 100 hours of community service with my sorors just for popularity. Hell, i hardly wear pari anymore just because of the fact that i want to be known as Antoinette and not Antoinette the Zeta although i know it wont be that way. The only reason i do wear pari every week is because we wear it every wednesday for community service. Zeta doesn't even throw parties on my campus and we are one of the least popular organizations on campus because as you have said we do COMMUNITY SERVICE and not party all the time or fight other greeks. Besides, i feel as though i was known before i was greek and i dont need my letters to define who i am

1FocusedBruh,
I agree BUT what kind of actions are you taking to make a change? There's no point in complaining, if you're not willing to take action.
And with that said, 1FocusedBruh, think of why you "joined" IPhiT and focus your energy on THAT, not on what someone from another org is (or isn't) doing. Just a thought
