Hmm...the average size is 14...I really think there's a problem with America. Not to say 14 is HUGE but our nation definitely has some weight issues to figure out.

yeah I'm sorry but it's just not healthy to be that big, no matter what your height is. This is a major issue in the black community. There is a difference between having curves, being thick, and being obese. You can be size 6 with curvy. If you're a size 20 with curves... they're curves of fat, not a real shape. Black people need to stop eating like we're slaves (neckbone, gizzards, chit'lins) and start eating like we're trying to live. Collard greens aren't the only damn vegetable, and candied yams don't count!
Someone needs to take a health class. You can actually be a size 14 HEALTHY and in shape. You can be a six and unhealthy.

Not every big person is big because they eat like "slaves" (which is a very disturbing analogy by the way)....yes there are those folks who don't know how to quit and eat their way out of everything...then there are those big people who DONT eat and because they dont eat and stay active their metabolism is very low...this is the case with MANY big people...Then there are big people with medical problems...and no im not talking about diabetes...heart disease and what not...im talking about medical problems that actually cause the overweight...such as Glandoral problems that effect a good 5% of Black Women...and in case you are wondering...im in that 5 % of black women....It pains me when people only take a simple look at a big/fat person and automatically think they are that way because they dont know how to lay off the fried chicken...hmmm...and you can be Big and healthy you know...healthy doesn't mean you weigh under 150 lbs....
As a big person myself i do realize that there is a SERIOUS obesity problem in our country...i dont doubt that...and its dangerous yes...and something needs to be done...but stuff like that doesnt happen overnight you know....
You guys have NO IDEA what it feels like to be in the shoes of a big person...NO IDEA...you would think us a black folk would start encouraging one another for situations like this...but no...only put downs?? Tell me how exaclty is THAT helping the situation??
Okay Fat Girl Sweet Lee, let me start off first and foremost by apologizing. I didn't mean for my comments to affect you in that manner. Perhaps I should have explained myself a little better.
First my issue with obesity with black America isn't directed toward the sisters with genetic/medical issues. It is directed to the sister at the buffet line with the asthma pump in her back pocket. It is directed to the brother eating the supersize bag of pork rinds while tethered to his respirator, to the mother buying supersize soda big bags of candy because her kids like them.
When I say eating like slaves, I mean the **** mentality of capitalizing on every meal. Now the slaves probably did it because they didn't experience many quality meals, or know the next time they could come by one. However, black people have retained that "all-you-can-eat" mentality. Think about it... go to a buffet in a diverse city.. who will be the predominant racial group there. And yes I've seen all those white people at Old Country Buffet... but they aren't disproportionately dropping **** of obesity-related issues. Think about our habits:
Growing up I was raised to clean my plate. I was also raised to drink after I finished eating. Now I know the whole "waste not, want not" and "there are children starving in Africa" spiel... but its just not healthy. Teaching kids that they have to finish every bit of whats on their plate is very dangerous... it's a habit that I still carry today... I just learned to take smaller portions. Additionally, it is proven that drinking while you eat **** in digestion and makes you full faster. Black parents need to start teaching healthier eating habits besides "eat your vegetables".
Furthermore, the **** mentality allowed for the consumption of anything edible. Maybe I just don't have a taste for it, but I don't understand the usage of lard, excessive gravy, random parts of cows and pigs, etc. in meals. Lard and gravy especially are loaded with so many destructive, unhealthy elements it makes you wonder why it's legal.
At age 11 I made the conscious decision to never eat beef or pork again. I saw the obesity of women in my family and how it directly correlated to health issues and I realized that I didn't want to live like that. If you are reading this, knowing full well that you are obese, and thinking "I can't sacrifice beef and pork" remember that what you are really saying is "I can't sacrifice beef and pork for the sake of my health". Do you know how good it feels to eat and not feel "heavy" or "tired"? Isn't food supposed to energize you. I think that sometimes black people forget that we are supposed to eat for nourishment... not because we see it and like how it tastes. I'm not a skinny girl by a long shot. At 5'5", 150 pounds, that places me at a size 10. Last year I gained the freshman 15 from overeating. I could have just said "hmmph, I like my extra curves". But what I said was, "I need to get active and lose some of this fat I gained. So I got myself a gym membership and worked it off.
Too many black people gain weight and try to say "I'm just thick", when a lot of times its physical inertia and poor eating habits that have created this "thickness".
To be honest, the end of the day, people are just going to do as they please. If you are a "big girl" and you are healthy and in shape, good for you. While I have not personally met too many size 20 women who are healthy and in shape, can run a mile without being drenched in sweat, can do 100 crunches with ease, etc. maybe they do exist. I don't know, and it isn't especially of my concern. But I have noticed a serious issue with black eating habits that if left unchecked, will be disastrous by next generation.
Fat Girl Sweet Lee (cuz u know I can't just call u Fat Girl in this post), I am so, so sorry. I know what it is to be "the fat kid" and I remember the relief of escaping that stigma. I would hate to think that I contributed to any grief or sadness on your part. You are a beautiful person. And I pray that you are a healthy person too :-)

A man smokes 6 cigarettes a day for 30 years, a woman smokes 2 cigarettes a day for 30 years... what's the different between the two? It'll probably take the woman longer to develope lung cancer.

While i agree with you in a sense....i also disagree with you...some people do gain a LITTLE bit of weight and do consider themselves just thick...while you may want to get rid of the FAT...someone else is enjoying the extra they gained...that is their choice...thats what they like...they "like their extra curves"....and there is nothing wrong with that...and nothing wrong with you gettin a membership at the gym to knock it off...Good for you...

...what does doing 100 crunches with EASE have to do with being healthy....or running a mile without being drenched in sweat?? Im sorry...but out of everything you just said that had to be the most ignorant thing you've typed....Fat Girl Sweet Lee (cuz u know I can't just call u Fat Girl in this post), I am so, so sorry. What I meant by this is that I don't know many size 20 woman that can stand high physical exertion without becoming winded. Having a healthy heart rate during physical exertion decreases the risk of having heart-related illness. I know plenty of skinny people that aren't physically fit either, but most of the big people I know aren't able to handle much cardiovascular stimulation.

and PLENTY of skinny folks aren't able to handle much cardiovascular stimulation either...just like you said...in a nutshell...skinny does not equal physically fit.....simple...i still say that was a very ignorant thing to say...but thanks for trying to clear that up for a sista...appreciate it....
Weeeellllll...I think i still stand with my original statement. It really makes me sick to see Americans who let themselves go and then try a two-week diet of starving themselves to lose weight. It's unhealthy to try a quick fix like that. We need to concentrate more on health a fitness. So a girl who is size 12 can be physically fit, yes. But after awhile that fat will start to leave. It's not a new idea! So why are people finding such difficulty with it? It's not like people have to cut a leg off. It's just caring about your body enough to want what's best for it. And having a "wide body frame" doesn't mean anything. I'm wide. Not wide so I have to be put in a size 12 or 14. But for my size I am wide, but I can somehow manage to fit into a size 7. My mother was a size 16 and said it was because she was wide. Well, once she started eating healthier and working out every now and then, she realized that getting rid of some unwanted fat & getting into a size 10 showed she wasn't as wide as she thought. People need to get around the excuses of blaming their body frame and saying their comfortable how they are because you might realize too late how important it was to lose that 15 or 20 pounds. There is no way that anyone can change my opinion because my best friend's father who weighs just above 300 lbs has to be while he sleeps has already had 2 mild heartattacks. His health is sooo bad because of his weight that he cannot even get up to do physical activity. And he's only 44. The strain on the family is tremendous and I dont want 2 see others go thru this. But if u choose to not care for yourself you really can't say this will never happen to you. SO people, pleeease be careful.
