Forced to be paper? Posted on 09-20-2005
GetItRightTheFirstTime

I have known for years which organization I want to be a part of, so I was upset upon my arrival to college to find that they have been suspended from my campus. After over 5 years, they are finally coming back to my school! I was so excited to see that they had posted a meeting flyer. I went to the meeting (close to 400 damn aspirants )Now that they are coming back it looks like the first line will be paper  And I will have graduated by the time the next chance to apply comes around. I'm torn because I was looking forwrd to the whole pledge experience. But I truly do love the organization and would want to be a part of it either way. Would you have applied for your organization if you knew that there would be no line? I'm just intersted in hearing some opinions.

I am new to the board, and have read some interesting post. This idea of being considered paper has always intriqued me. This whole notion of wanting to bond and going through weeks of hell is very short-sighted. If you get the opportunity to become a member of the organization, believe me, you will get all the bonding and critique that you need.

I agree. How much bonding do you actually need? When you are with these girls doing events and community service projects that is all the bonding you need. You don't have to go through humiliation and getting your behind beat to experience bonding. That is twisted!

I don't know the whole paper process seems a bit much too me, but I'd pledge.

What do you mean that the paper process seems a bit much? That is the way the process is supposed to be. Hazing is against the law. You aren't supposed to "pledge". That term is considered hazing. They now call it MIP. Its interesting that you would say that the paper process is a bit much, but in actuality all of the Greek process is a paper process. You have to fill out an application, write a letter of interest, have documentation of community service, and have reference letters. So I would say that to join any Greek org, you will have to go through the paper process because if not, you won't have an application on file with Nationals and therefore you couldn't be a member. So it is pretty much a paper process!

In your eyes, what does the paper process consist of that makes you believe it's too much?

So are you in support of hazing? Famous people probably wouldn't care if they got respect from other Greeks. They are millionaires and why should they care what anyone thinks? If they are famous, and a part of a Greek org, they were probably humanitarians to begin with. Most celebrities do a lot of charity work, and Greek orgs come to them because of what they are already doing in the community. Alicia Keys, for example, does a lot of work with **** research and fundraising. She has been doing that for years way before AKA approached her for membership. So for you to say they don't get respect, isn't true. They get respect from outsiders, and the people that they are impacting in a positive way. When people become grown, who cares about the respect factor of the Greeks? That is really callow! A person still has their letters, and will always be a member regardless of what anyone thinks. Like you mentioned before, they pay their thousand and they will be a member for life. Those people that talk about, not respecting, honorary members are the main ones that aren't putting their money where their mouth is. Those honorary members donate a lot of money to these Greek orgs, and guess what? They are on the national websites of these organizations. You don't see an average joe on the website, you see the famous people! So..who get's the recognition by the nationals? Someone who pledged and got beat down mentally and physically or the one who's been doing what the Greek orgs have been founded upon (before being approached for membership) without being verbally and physically abused? I think the latter answers that question. You can find that answer when you view these Greek national websites and see who's on the front page.

That is none of your concern what I am. It seems like you are sending a mixed message. On one message thread, you are talking about denouncing your letters because of religious reasons and now you are on this thread supporting hazing. So which is it going to be? Are you against the sin and hurt that people cause others, when they haze, or are you for it? People that actually pledge still have memories of the words that people spoke into their lives to devalue them. I don't care how much they say they are proud they went through the process, they will still carry the hurt the words caused years down the road. Majority of the people that go through hazing battle depression, insecurity, and other mental issues down the road. Anything God has, for people, doesn't require you to be hurt to be a part of it. Jesus was beat and went through shame so we don't have to. So why do we have to be beat and go through humiliation for some worldly stuff? That hazing stuff isn't of God, it's of Satan. When you go against God's word and commandments, to love people and treat others like how you want to be treated, you are stepping off into something else that isn't of God. Your arms are too short to box with God. So people need to be very careful with messing with God's people in the name of a Greek org. Some girls tried to haze me before, and I saw them actually going through some stuff afterwards. Even though I prayed for them to be saved, God doesn't like people messing with his children and he will defend his people. People don't know the prayers or the confessions you speak over yourself, and they mess around and bump up against your anointing. Which isn't a good thing. So when you try to do evil things to people, such as hazing, you don't know what prayers or words people are confessing over themselves. Then you make it a personal battle with God, because God will step in to defend his people. I know this guy who was hazed undergrad. He is a Christian guy. He told me that all the guys that hazed him all started experiencing bad stuff after the incidents, and they reaped what they sowed. Sowing and reaping is a universal law. Whatever seeds you put in the ground is what you are going to reap. So if people want to be blessed, they should refrain from doing such acts.
