TO PAPER OR NOT TO PAPER Posted on 05-19-2004
Soundcheck 1898

We all know hazing is "Illegal" (riiiiiight)... but still occurs anyway regardless of how watchful the eye is on big brother and whatever guidelines they have. However, every once in a while the the opportunity presents itself to some folk to go paper. Some do... some choose to work for theirs. I just want to here from those in any GLO, their feelings about the whole going paper scenario. Right now i'm semi-neutral because now that i'm on the other side I understand the whole not wanting to jeopardize getting your chapter kicked off the yard over somebody who complains plus the fact that this past semester was far from fun and i'm really not the type to want to pass that on to somebody else, however, i still feel people should work for their letters in some kind of way, feel me? What do you think?

i'll keep my non-greek comments to myself on that one...maybe not...but paper and legacy are starting to look about alike in my neck of the woods.

Question...would you rather have someone who "pledged" and has done anything since the day he/she went over or would you rather have "paper" who knows the history and works hard for the org? Which is worse? Question...since you are life long members of your orgs, at which point in your life will this "pledge/paper" thing no longer be a burning issue to you? Age 50...60...70...never???
For the first question....It depends.... If I'm at a greek quiz bowl trying to win a Thousand dollarz, I'd want that smart paper nugga on my team!! Butttttt........ ...If I'm walking down a dark alley and get approached by some hoodlums threatnin' to whip my ****....I want that brother that pledged like I did, and would be willing to shed blood sweat and tears for me; at my side. And the 2nd question, I truely believe that as you get older, the pledge/paper issue begins to fade away. Especially as you meet more older brothers that were recently accepted as Grad members (in which only about 12% of them still pledge) There are always time gaps between generations. As we speak, there are a handful of old school greekz that raise their eyebrow when they see new potential pledges not walking around campus toting bricks, and faces painted singing koom-bey-ahh, eating bannanas out of dog bowls! times change, and so do customs.

Now I may not be Greek but (and correct me if im wrong), but I dont think just because some is a legacy means that they are paper. Its just that there are people who legacies that may take the "easy" road out.

Your right... sometimes being a legacy just means your have a guaranteed spot online... even then its just sometimes. You still can and probably will go through the process just like everybody else has. However, I personally don't know of any instances of anybody going paper outside of legacies... are there any other instances?

Greeks: what does that say about an organization that doesn't have a probate show. does that automatically mean that they are paper? because you really never know why they didnt have one. especially if certain organizations don't allow them in the first place.

I can answer this one. A probate show is somethin extra that some chapters have to introduce the neos. Some chapters don't have a probate show because they're either not allowed (some still have them of course) or that they aren't really pressed to have one. No probate show does not equal paper. Some paper greeks from what I've heard part-take(sp) in probate shows.

Hmmmmm, good question but we as Greeks must remember that the real pledging starts AFTER you are blessed with your letters b/c it’s not how exactly how you came in, but what you do to uphold the values and uplift the name of your organization. I personally would want a bro that is about putting in work for his organization and not simply showing up at the party or stepshow with some nalia on. I don’t have patience, nor, time for “T-Shirt” wearers. I need bruhs that are down for the cause and willing to put in WORK. There I’ve said my peace on that… lol As for question two, the whole “paper” thing goes away, well it depends on the mindset of the people around you, it’s mighty hard to sit around with your LB’s/LS’s and talk about your “intake experience” when u aint really have one..

So you're saying that if you didn't get your **** beat, then you didn't have an experience? Please explain this for me, maybe I am misinterpreting
