Would you let someone close to you wear your nalia if.... Posted on 11-05-2006

...they really needed it? This is a true story that happend to me... I was driving my mothers car to the store and I got caught in a bad thunderstorm. I didnt have an umbrella and it was POURING down raining outside. My mom keeps a Delta Sigma Theta umbrella in her car. (clearly Im not a Delta because I am a male). Anyway, I said fukk it and I took the umbrella with me inside the store. Personally I didnt think it was a big deal...but hey, thats just me. Would you let someone real close to you wear/use your nalia if they really needed it? Like if you have on your frat jacket and your girlfriend gets cold, would you let her wear it to keep warm? Or if a friend needs to go out in the rain but doesnt have an umbrella would you let them use yours even though it clearly has letters on it and they are not a member of that organization?

I did talk with the same friend today about this issue and she said that she had been taught that you never let someone who was not a part of your sorority "hold your letters" because they are sacred and only another soror would know the meaning of the letters and therefore possess the right to 'hold them.' That's not verbatim, but my interpretation of her view. That's why she would never let another person other then her soror touch anything that had her letters on it because in doing so would be disgracing their meaning. (Again not verbatim).
Don't get me wrong, her viewpoint is completely merited. HOWEVER, I think there are exceptions and limits to most things. As Truth said, at the end of the day the person is supposed to make the letters, not vice versa. And lets be real...the manufacturers that produce, package, and distrubute Greek nailia are not members of our organizations...and in most cases not even Greek. So if someone outside of an org. touching or holding nalia devalues the letters or takes away the significance...then dang, we wouldn't have nalia to begin with. Some folks make things deeper than they need to be
