HOW DID U END UP AT YOUR CURRENT SCHOOL? Posted on 05-26-2004

QUESTION. HOW DID U END UP AT UR CURRENT SCHOOL... DID U ALWAYS WANT TO GO THERE OR WAS IT BY CIRCUMSTANCES... ME BEFORE LAST JANUARY... I NEVER EVER CONSIDERED AN HBCU... AS FAR AS I WAS CONCERNED. I WAS GOING TO BE A UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI FOOTBALL PLAYER AND GO TO SCHOOL THERE. EITHER THERE OR POTENTIALLY CLEMSON. I HAD COMMITTED TO USM BEFORE THAT. WELL SH!T FELL APART AND THE COACH WHO RECRUITED ME GOT FIRED... IT WAS EITHER DELTA STATE.. A FEW POTENTIAL MORE SMALL PWC'S OR A JUNIOR COLLEGE... WELL A FEW WEEKS LATER JACKSON STATE CALLED AND OFFERED ME A FULL SCHOLARSHIP.... MY DAD WENT TO JACKSON STATE SO I LOOKED INTO EM.. TOOK A RECRUIT TRIP AND IT WAS OK. MISSISSIPPI STATE CALLED LIKE A WEEK BEFORE SIGNING DAY WAS LIKE WHY DON'T YOU WAIT ONE WEEK AFTER SIGNING DAY AND IF WE DO NOT SIGN THIS OTHER PLAYER, WE ARE GOING TO SIGN YOU. I WAS LIKE THAT IS TOO RISKY.. BECAUSE IF I WAIT AND THEY DON;T SIGN ME.. I AM STUCK LIKE CHUCK.... SO I WENT AHEAD AND SIGNED WITH JSU... (I STILL WISH I WAS AT UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISS)... I LIKE DIVERSITY..

I was forced to go to the school i go to now... :? . My mom saw Howard's tuition fees and rates and said "NO!" in the quickness...told me that VUU was not academically stable....Hampton wasnt on her and my dad's budget...and to not even think about goin to VSU....and told me VCU would be my best bet. I was heated! But now after my first year at VCU....i cant say it was bad. Even though i would have liked to experience my first year at Howard instead....i dont regret goin to VCU at all. But im still mad at my moms for that :x ...

I had a lot of family go to Johnson C. Smith..so it was kinda in my blood. One thing that really sealed the deal was the Academic Scholarship that I received.

I had been interested in Hampton for a while, but I thought it best to have a back up school. I didn't know what school to choose. I knew that I didn't want to be anywhere where I knew people, so somehow I chose Tenn. State. I was transferring from a junior college, so I wanted to transfer in the spring. I applied to both schools, and TSU got to me quicker, but I was still pulling for Hampton. Hampton never got back to me, which I thought was very strange. So I went to Nashville, the first week at school, I found at that Hampton sent me my acceptance package in the mail. I was so HURT!!!!!!!!!! THe lady at Hampton told me that If I still wanted to go, I could defer my admission until the Fall, I thought about it, but TSU got me hooked. I love it and I love Nashville. I have met so many people from all over, and I feel that is where GOd has me.

When I was a freshman in high school, I thought of those huge white schools like Emory and Stanford. I probably would be at some PWI. But my cousin was visiting some girl he was diggin at Morris Brown. I went with him and fell in love with the whole concept of HBCUs. I ended up applying to Hampton, Spelman, and Dillard. I was going to apply to Howard, but I was too cheap ($40 bucks application fee?). I sent my SAT scores to Clark but never did apply. Dillard was the only school that responded on time. And after recieving their reward letter :? , it was down to Hampton and Spelman. I was so torn because the two schools are very comparable on paper. So I visited both. I visited Spelman first. I really liked what I saw. The bond of sisterhood was evident. And it is a nice campus. But when I visited Hampton, I just felt it. I loved Hampton. I would have had to go to whichever school offered me the most money. Spelman offered me pennies on the dollar of what their tuition costs. So I am able to attend my first overall choice, Hampton University

I didn't know DeAnthony went to Paine. Well, L-town doing it big at the HBCUs. A lot of track members from Lithonia class of 2004 are going to HBCUs on track scholarships.

Mainly, I ended up at AAMU because it offered me a full scholarship (to make a long story short). But when I was a senior in high school, I didn't really apply to many places, and it just so happened that AAMU was one of the few places I applied to, and it offered me the most money. Besides, it had a major that I wanted to study for undergrad. For other reasons, I've always wanted to attend an HBCU (because my parents and most of my family members attended HBCUs) but I wasn't sure which one I wanted to go to. Also, I was in this club called Future 500 while I was a senior in HS, and I became acquainted with a woman who had good connections with folks at almost every HBCU. So, she encouraged me to go to AAMU and basically hooked me up with a scholarship. Overall, I felt God gave me a purpose to be here, and I've learned so much in so many areas of my life that I can't describe. So, I consider it a true blessing.
