Talented Tenth Posted on 05-27-2004

so, I was gazing through a post and I saw this brought up, and it brought back a lot of feelings I felt when I was first introduced to this concept. For those of you who don't know, this concept was brought up by W.E.B DuBois....first black to graduate from Harvard, migrated to Ghana, Souls of Black Folk, etc. etc. Anyways, he felt that it was up to the "talented tenth" of black folk to basically carry the rest of them that are lagging. When I thought about it, I said to myself "Is he saying that only a tenth of the total black population is talented??" But now I am starting to think that perhaps he didn't mean to say that only a tenth were talented, but out of all the talented black people, the tenth are the ones who should take responsibility for the rest. I would really appreciate it if someone cleared this up for me. We didn't really go over it much in my history class. And also, how do you feel about the "talented tenth" scenario?? do you think it is right, or wrong?

MAGIC JOHNSON ....AN AMERICAN HERO
as a "floss" angeles native, I YOU know I would have to step in on this one. Ok, Magic Johnson is a brilliant businessman, and for that reason one may call him an American Hero.....for America is all about capitalistic gains. But as far as him being a man of the people....I would sadly have to disagree. The truth of the matter is this.....he is nothing more than a puppet....a face. White people use his face to get black people involved. I would even go so far as to say that he not even the TURE owner of a majority of the things people think he owns. He has the Starbucks, Fatburgers, and even his his sights on Downton L.A. I mean but does the hood really need Starbucks? Not really. Build a library....start a SAT Prep class at innercity schools.....Instead we got a second rate Bally's ....I mean dayum....we ain't even got a pool. I think its the only Bally's without a pool. And don't even get me started on his theatres......"we can do it in our own community" Yea the fukk right. He came by maybe once or twice.....that's it. I am sure if he showed his face around there more it wouldn't be as rundown as it is. Now, the mexicans have taken it over and I for one say let the have it. Steve Harvery, I would give more respect to him because he actually donates things to schools and fights to give innercity schools books. However, I doubt many of you have heard of endeavors. Magic Johnson....just like Micheal Jordan....is out to get paid! The only difference is Magic does it in Real Estate. I am sorry, but putting up a restaurant and building a gym ain't really "helping" the black community.
Whoa!! As another "floss angeles" native I have to provide an opposing view. I whole-heartedly disagree. Magic Johnson is not only not a puppet but his is one of the only black men, shoot black people period, in the lime light makings efforts to change some of the things that plague our community. He can't save the world by himself but he does a whole lot. He is attempting to install a sense of entrepreneurship in the black community which is at times VERY important. He is making his change the way he can and he is doing a DAMN good job, how can you criticize him by saying build libraries in the hood and he doesn't come around. Magic is ALWAYS in the hood. And Steve Harvey yea **in the words of Jay-z** "He's alright but he's not real." He gives a few dollars here and there but he is not as community oriented as Magic. MAGIC JOHNSON the AFRICAN AMERICAN HERO!!!!!!!!!!!!

^^^^who is JayZ to call someone all right...he aint no better than Steve Harvey...hell he has hurt the community with his lyrics and disrespect for Black women. He rather give toys to children , than books that will help their mind grow instead of making them more materialistic.!!

DAYUM LOL. I ain't even realize you said that Cal......I ain't peeped this post in a minute. But you know I'm finna get you...........and don't get mad, its all in love baby  Ok, first and foremost.........YOU AIN'T NO "FLOSS" ANGELES NATIVE!!   You stay in Carson, dawg. Sure I think thats LA Country....but it ain't "LA". It ain't south central......C'mon, now. I'm in the hood 24/7 365 and I ain't seen Magic in almost any of his shops save the day they first open. Steve Harvey..........you see him in the hood all the time. Well now that he is moving back to Dallas, that won't be happenin so much, but he would do live remotes all over the place. In that ghetto Walmart, in the ghetto Mall, at Crenshaw High, prolly the only black majority high school left in LA. He helped with the funding of their new...uhm...some kind of building that escapes me but I know he was involved in it. He is actively involved in helping innercity kids get mored books. Magic......I on't know......like I said he is a great business man and I will give him that. He knows how to ma ke money and I ain't knockin' him for that.....but I wouldn't consider him a "hero." David Robinson is a hero......he built a school. Mutombo is a hero.....he built a hospital. Magic is a hero....he built a Starbucks??? Who needs an education and good health when you can drink overpriced coffee!!!! You yourself know that don't even sound right!! I mean, you make it seem like the money that is flowin' into his businesses is somehow making it back to the community, If it is........I am lookin', but I don't see it. You know where that money is going???.....WHITEYVILLE!! Yup that's right. lol lol I'm lookin' at your post and laughing because I STILL can't believe you called Magic community oriented. i don't know........maybe I'm being a little **** the brother. lol I don't know......but still, a hero??? PUUUUHHHH-LEASE!!!
