Cosby Has Harsh Words for Black Community Posted on 07-02-2004

By DON BABWIN, Associated Press Writer CHICAGO - Bill Cosby (news) went off on another tirade against the black community Thursday, telling a room full of activists that black children are running around not knowing how to read or write and "going nowhere." He also had harsh words for struggling black men, telling them: "Stop beating up your women because you can't find a job." Cosby made headlines in May when he upbraided some poor blacks for their grammar and accused them of squandering opportunities the civil rights movement gave them. He shot back Thursday, saying his detractors were trying in vain to hide the black community's "dirty laundry." "Let me tell you something, your dirty laundry gets out of school at 2:30 every day, it's cursing and calling each other n------ as they're walking up and down the street," Cosby said during an appearance at the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition & Citizenship Education Fund's annual conference. "They think they're hip," the entertainer said. "They can't read; they can't write. They're laughing and giggling, and they're going nowhere." In his remarks in May at a commemoration of the anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education desegregation decision, Cosby denounced some blacks' grammar and said those who commit crimes and wind up behind bars "are not political prisoners." "I can't even talk the way these people talk, 'Why you ain't,' 'Where you is' ... and I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk," Cosby said then. "And then I heard the father talk ... Everybody knows it's important to speak English except these knuckleheads. You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth." Cosby elaborated Thursday on his previous comments in a talk interrupted several times by applause. He castigated some blacks, saying that they cannot simply blame whites for problems such as teen pregnancy and high school dropout rates. "For me there is a time ... when we have to turn the mirror around," he said. "Because for me it is almost analgesic to talk about what the white man is doing against us. And it keeps a person frozen in their seat, it keeps you frozen in your hole you're sitting in." Cosby lamented that the racial slurs once used by those who lynched blacks are now a favorite expression of black children. And he blamed parents. "When you put on a record and that record is yelling `n----- this and n----- that' and you've got your little 6-year-old, 7-year-old sitting in the back seat of the car, those children hear that," he said. He also condemned black men who missed out on opportunities and are now angry about their lives. "You've got to stop beating up your women because you can't find a job, because you didn't want to get an education and now you're (earning) minimum wage," Cosby said. "You should have thought more of yourself when you were in high school, when you had an opportunity." Cosby appeared Thursday with the Rev. Jesse Jackson (news - web sites), founder and president of the education fund, who defended the entertainer's statements. "Bill is saying let's fight the right fight, let's level the playing field," Jackson said. "**** people can't do that. Illiterate people can't do that." Cosby also said many young people are failing to honor the sacrifices made by those who struggled and died during the civil rights movement. "Dogs, water hoses that tear the bark off trees, Emmett Till," he said, naming the black youth who was tortured and murdered in Mississippi in 1955, allegedly for whistling at a white woman. "And you're going to tell me you're going to drop out of school? You're going to tell me you're going to steal from a store?" Cosby also said he wasn't concerned that some whites took his comments and turned them "against our people." "Let them talk," he said. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Once again the man is on point.....

Yep, he pretty much said all of that when he came to speak at Howard this year. I loved it because he didn't sugar coat a darn thing, he kept it real. And the clips he showed from the documentary "Eyes On The Prize" fit in perfectly (if u have not seen this documentary...SHAME ON YOU :!: ). We tend to often forget and take for granted the doors that our ancestors opened for us. Sometimes a wake up call is needed, and i'm not mad at Bill for sounding the alarm. He had us comin out of that auditorium feelin like we could change the world. Definately one of my favorite Howard moments....hands down. Here Bill is inspiring the students at HU He even brought my girls Debbe Allen and Phylisha Rashaad with him (HU alumni, HOLLA!). [/img]

SO SOMEBODY TELL ME HOW MUCH MONEY BILL COSBY MADE OF FAT ALBERT'S ILLITERATE @$$??? OR HOW MANY TIMES HE WAS CAUGHT CHEATING OFF HIS WIFE??? OR WHY HIS DAUGHTER WAS STRUNG OUT ON ****...DID HE NOT SPEND TIME WITH HER? THE SAME TIME HE SAID THAT POOR PEOPLE SHOULD SPEND WITH THEIR KIDS??? THEY'RE LUCKY THERE WASNT A DISCUSSION PANEL FOR THIS.. HOW DARE HE SAY LOWER INCOME FAMILIES ARE SO BAD, NONCARING, AND IRRESPONSIBLE...BUT YET AND STILL HIS FAMILY IS JUST AS TERRIBLE??? HE THINKS JUST BECAUSE HE HAS MONEY HE CAN SAY WHATEVER HE WANTS...IF HE WAS SUCH A FATHER FIGURE.....THE KIDS ON "THE COSBY SHOW" WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN SO SCREWED UP.....
and i feel where u are coming from and u do have a point. However, Bill Cosby is a man, he is human and so is his family. They aren't perfect, but just because they aren't, does that mean he should shut up and not try to uplift our people as a whole? MLK Jr. was one our greatest leaders, but please believe that he had PLENTY of skeletons and imperfections. But if he would have had the mindset "oh, i'm not perfect. I have problems. I better not take this march. I better not make that speech. People will judge me". If every great leader thought like that, we would be much worse off than we are today.

EXACTLY!!!!!! Look at BROTHER MALCOLM X ...he was a ****, a drug dealer, and a hardened criminal who spent 8 years in prison!! BUT he did not let that stop him, if anything it established a relationship with the lower class african americans and then he became a role model for overcoming obstacles and still reaching one's potential.... BROTHER MALCOLM X- AN AFRICAN AMERICAN HERO

thats fine and dandy that YOU realize the "nobody's perfect" speech...but BILL COSBY'S SPEECH WAS TARGETED FOR THE LOWER INCOME FAMILIES...LIKE RICH FAMILIE DONT HAVE PROBLEMS....AND I WAS POINTING OUT HIS SO IT COULD BE NOTED THAT HIS SPEECH IS POINTLESS...IF YOU'RE GONNA UPLIFT PEOPLE..THEN DO THAT..DONT POINT OUT EVERYTHIN UNDER THE SUN ONE SPECIFIC SECTION OF THE WORLD IS DOING....IF YOU'RE GONNA TALK ABOUT HOW BLACK PARENTS AS A WHOLE NEED TO TEACH THEIR KIDS....THEN FINE...BUT DONT SAY THE PROBLEM IS MAINLY FROM THE LOWER INCOME FAMILES...BECAUSE THATS FALSE...

i agree with what kindhearted said about not being perfect. it's kinda like if everybody waited until they got they life right to become a believer, churches would be empty. there wouldn't even be a preacher. Cosby was still on point.

he talking bout people who live in a bad situation and aint tryna do nuffin to correc it, people who dont value edumacation an caint speak right and den blame it on somebody else, there is a difference between having problems and trying, and giving up or never trying at all and having problems and complaining, or not complaining its not about the crime, its about the children
