I have been at FAMU two years, and even though I used to to come to Florida every year or two growing up, I didn't see much of what I have seen since I have been here. It seems like people take pride in bein extremely country. What I mean, is those who have horrible dredlocks and sometimes gold teeth, and just talk ignorant as hell as if it is tite. I don't have any problem with a country accent, but there are some people who completely over-do it, and who never talk proper, as if it is the thing to do. I was watchin grandaddy souf on TV, and he was talkin about "down here, we don't pronounce the th at the end of words. We don't say south, we say souf. We don't say north, we say norf" and I was lookin like man this guy's a idiot. I could see if a kid was raised to say souf and that's all he knew, but for somebody who knows how to say it right but chooses to say it wrong just sounds stupid as hell to me.
Now have things always been like this? Is it just a Florida thing? I definitely realize that all people down south are not like this, so I am not generalizing anyone at all. But for these select people who take pride in bein ignorant and never lookin presentable, is it somethin that they think is good? I don't get it...
Bein country doesn't necessarily connotate ignorance. I hate it when people automatically deduct 100 IQ points because I have an accent. Like I'm slow or somethin. Fact of the matter is that I still use big words. I still pronounce everything. I just have an accent. I got most people BEAT as far as countriness... Can't wait to get to Louisiana though... 8)
And you damn straight its cool to be extra country...
and that's wassup right there that's what im talkin about...ignorant because i have a southern accent? f*ck outta here with that...sorry, not tryin to flame, but c'mon...seriously.
You CLEARLY did not take the time to read this thread in its entirety.
actually i did, with comprehension and through out this thread, people continuously wanted correct what they said as in couthern accents spoken on purpose being thought of as ignorant. i can speak english perfectly but since it's not COMFORTABLE for me to do so, i speak with a southern accent since that's how i speak.
purposely overdoing it, it shouldn't be considered ignorant either...you know what....being overly conscious of how you look when you come out the house should be considered ignorant as well because if you over do an acent or you purposely over analyze your attire, you are trying either 1.) Trying to impress someone. or 2.) Trying to impress someone.
that's all there is to it. point blank period

First off...no one was saying having a southern accent is talking ignorant...everyone has different dialects and accents coming from different parts of the country...and like we said through out this thread that you " claimed " to read. We said it becomes ignorant when u go out ur way to over do ur accent...whether it is a southern accent, new york accent, mid west accent, etc... just to do it...and because of it it makes u sound ridiculous and uneductated...basically over using the slang, over using the actual accent so it becomes more obvious, just doing it to the point that ur drawing unnecessary attention to urself. We all obviously when we talkin amongst our friends dont talk in correct grammer cause we arent being formal as if we are talking to an employer or professor, etc...but there are people who take it beyond a point of extremity that isnt necessary when they are event alking to their people's. Like I mentioned before, Im from up north...so I have enough problems understanding what someone with a thick southern accent is saying..so dont make the sh*t more difficult by sayin anything and talkin like anything to seem cool or whatever...and like we said before...that is people from EVERYWHERE overdoing their accents not just people from the south. It just happens that we are concentrating this topic on people from the south.

Over doing an accent and over doing ur attire are NOT the same thing, and cannot be both be categorized as ignorant. If someone is over doing their accent just cause Ima say they are ignorant just cause they dont know any better and think its cool...Being overly concerned when u come out the house is either because u really care about how u look or like u said, they trying to impress people. But if they are trying to impress people they know EXACTLY what they are doing. Their is no ignorance about that. Its just stupid.

One, ease up on that red please, im not yelling at you and appreciate it if you would not yell at me.
Two, you summed up my entire argument with these two sentences. Im a stickler for correct nomenclature. If you feel something is stupid, just say it's stupid, but dont call it and/or it's users ignorant because you may mean to say that you feel the act of over doing it is stupid but when you call it ignorant, you are calling people ignorant as well.
the two words have different meanings and historical connotations.

****...yell??? My bad, I aint know I could yell through a keyboard. but me putting exactly in caps was just me emphasising the word and me typing in red font is just the color i like to usually type in...not trying to yell at you at all. lol
