Whats up fellas. My school doesn't have a fraternity yet but I hope to transfer to Norfolk State University and join one. Now...whats the low down with them? What are they called? What did you have to do to get in one? Do you regret it? Do your "brothers" really have your back? LETS WORK PEOPLE!
Also...going back to the orginal post / question, you also don't have to transfer schools to pledge...you can pledge at a local school that has the frat if your school doesn't. There were people at my school who pledged elsewhere cuz we didn't have the orginization on campus. So there are also other options besides transferring...you just have to do your research like everyone else said. Also do remember what you are in school for...

Whats good fam... in case you didn't notice folk on this board can be type **** if you come across the wrong way  . Chock it up to experience.
Anyway if I understand correctly, you have a great asset which is your sister (especially if I think your interested in what i think you would be going for based on a previous comment of yours). My only suggestion to you is learn how to research things without asking others now (HINT :wink . This goes to you or anybody else who is interested in their respective org of interest.
1. You know what school you are going to... so do CAN find out who's active there (the internet is a wonderful tool). They should have a list orgs. that you can access some way
2. Get aquainted with members or at least learn who the bulk of them are in the chapter of interest. Show interest but know your stuff (what that is, is up to you) and make sure you have a DAMN good reason for wanting to be part of that org.
3. No matter what... if you really understand the concept of fraternity and especially if your not part of one, do not speak negative of another organization as a whole. Being on the flipside and understanding what I've been through as well as others, I can't hate.

OK, that "discretion is the key" crap is pretty lame. And no the low down isnt what you said...the low down is that fraternitys create (some) simple minded , arrogant fools such as yourself (pardon the name calling) who think that being a Greek (even when their Afro-American) is "the Shiiiiiiiyiiiit" and some BS secret society. I really dont want to join a greek frat, and no where did i say i did. If anything, any African org will do, being as thats what I am. Lets keep in mind that its just a friggin fraternity( ), not the secret service.
This is all i'm gonna say about that publicly. Whether you are "greek" (i have some minor issues with term that too but its nto that serious), part of an african based frat (e.g. Groove Phi Groove), or just some any random cat... If you are not an asset to your God, family, race, and humanity as a whole you gets no love. Although, many frats are misrepresented by some overzealous few, we all strive for the previously mentioned goals, just collectively amongst brothers who share the same high ideals (and yes it goes way deeper than that). For me... thats the real low down...
All i can say is do whats right for you so that u can in turn do the right thing for others. Holla...
(on another note ya'll ACE's got issues lol j/p  )
Advice taken...SOME. You are right, its not that serious, and neither is establishing a long distance relationship with someone unknown to find out about a frat, and thats why i just threw the questions out there on HBCU-CENTRAL.COM. I live in NYC, where everyone main concern is making money, not frats and stuff, thus few schools have them. I also didnt judge the people in frats as a whole, but I did realize that some of the people who (in your words) "have issues" are in frats. I know some frats are positive and thats why i want to join one. But right about now, the greeks are a real turnoff.
OH yea, hotcoco does have my back.

Okay...I wasn't gonna say anything......but I get hella offended when ignorant (uneducated...since he didn't know) people talk about things that they don't know anything about....I'm not a frat...but however I am GREEK...and Mr. the3rdosc...the reason we use greek names is not because we are in fact trying to be greeks, but because the greek writing system and philosophies connect with AFRICA...especially EGYPT...it was the Greeks that went to AFRICA and stole the writings.lifestyles, and philosophies of the Egyptians.........so therefore my brother....I proudly say I am GREEK...and being a part of DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY INC. has given me just as much honor pertaining to my African heritage as any other African Org (as you called it) would....Thank you and remember EDUCATION AND DISCRETION IS THE KEY!!!!
So let me get this straight, you actually celebrate the thievery of the Egyptian resources including writings and teachings? Are you kidding? Maybe im missing something but shouldnt Africans revolt in our robbings rather than use them in reference to the idiots (thats what they are) who stole them? Im BLACK, so i say i am, not greek. You say your greek cuz they stole Egyptian ways. No. Greeks, then, are really African (figuratively speaking).
People who have never read "Stolen Legacy" wouldn't understand why we decided to use Greek letters. If the young person knew the history of the oldest collegiate fraternity for blacks, he'd realize that the naming conventions were adopted to allow the groups to thrive on white campuses. However, there is meaning in the names of each of the organization and if you research a bit, you'd find out that the references and African imagery is so strong that the ONLY thing greek about most of our organizations is the name.
NOW that is a smart individual......glad somebody knows where i'm comin from....
Smart, ok. Confused, maybe. You see i believe in the preservation of our African culture, without the poisonous infiltration of Persians, greeks, europeans. I will however read this book to understand more.

Yo i'm from Queens New York going to school in Brooklyn. The closest school with a frat is 2 hours away upstate somewhere maybe. Plus, in case you did read carefully, im not going to transfer JUST TO pledge. But while i transfer, i eventually plan to pledge.
^^^ In an attempt to play peacemaker, I'm gonna put it down like this...
The only things really “Greek” about the BGLO’s are in fact the Greek symbols themselves. The meanings to these Chosen letters have certain non-Greek meaning & values attached to them. In the genesis of these organizations, Greek letters were the norm/protocol for these types of organizations when naming them. I believe that BGLO’s have ties and will continue to have ties Africa, and that my Founders established Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated, in 1914, upon the improvement and celebration of OUR people

It's a good book, but it didn't really help me to understand the purpose of using greek letters.......in fact, it helped guided me towards the organization I'm in now 8) . But, Like Aggie Blues just stated, all of these orgs are about the betterment of our community. I guess you just have to find the right one for you. Different strokes for different folks. And now since you have two people on different (though not so different) sides of the fence in the fam, you can hit us up for advice ......and don't act like you don't know who I'm talking about :x
BTW good job on the responses, Grasshopper
