TO PAPER OR NOT TO PAPER Posted on 05-19-2004
Soundcheck 1898

We all know hazing is "Illegal" (riiiiiight)... but still occurs anyway regardless of how watchful the eye is on big brother and whatever guidelines they have. However, every once in a while the the opportunity presents itself to some folk to go paper. Some do... some choose to work for theirs. I just want to here from those in any GLO, their feelings about the whole going paper scenario. Right now i'm semi-neutral because now that i'm on the other side I understand the whole not wanting to jeopardize getting your chapter kicked off the yard over somebody who complains plus the fact that this past semester was far from fun and i'm really not the type to want to pass that on to somebody else, however, i still feel people should work for their letters in some kind of way, feel me? What do you think?

I didn't mean that every Grad Chapter brings in paper lines. I was just using that as an example. Please believe I know that Grad chapters still Make and help Make lines.

Truly this is not meant to beat a **** horse, but I just can't fathom why someone would opt to go paper. If phenomonely there was no other choice, I guess it could be understood, but other than that, if you have the choice, it's hard for respect to be given to paper people. Now granted there probably are some skaters out there that do a whole helluva lot more for their school then some go-hard authentic greeks...but if that's the case join the SGA. I've always held my position as a greek with high esteem, just off the tradition of brotherhood. I didn't join my frat for community service, I could've done that without it. And even though there is nonsense between frats, deep down I respect other greeks that go hard, cause I know they got the same lesson I did. I'll be burned at the helm for this, but newbies, and interest if you have the opportunity, pledge!!!

But do you need to end up in Grady to earn your letters ? Speaking from an "old School" pov, pledging has gone to a level that seems to border on gang initiation. For a while it was not to a persons' advantage to admit you were a legacy.. they were extra **** you. From the info on one fraternity's site, I thought they only had the paper process.

I dont get the difference...paper/pledge both are in the organization and hopefully both are lviing up to the brotherhood/sisterhood and doing good works for their community so why hold such hatred for someone who chose to do it differently? If they are doing what they are supposed to shouldnt that matter more? Surely the brother/sister who is doing wrong day in and day out shouldnt get more respect b/c they pledged if they r doing wrong while the person who came in paper is doing right and helping people....If they are I don't understand the logic... Granted a process does create a bond but bonds can be created any which way if there is genuine sincere feelings... But anyway, would there be such animosity for a person who for religious/spiritual reasons disagreed with how the process is done and chose to come in the paper way to avoid alot of the bs that goes on? I mean a lot of pledging nowadays from what i've seen/heard is akin to joining a gang how is it brotherhood/sisterhood and the better of the community if u beating/beating the ish out or humiliating someone? Not getting on anyone's process just want to clear that up just asking and speaking. and seeking insight....Thank you.

Of course they are going to publish the paper process. Nobody wants to get sued. Also, you've got to think about the times we live in when it comes to forming your views on pledging. We live in an information age. We find out about news around the world almost as soon as it happens. So we hear more about the deaths and injuries associated with pledging than people did before. If a chick on line breaks her fingernail, it's all over the news. So it just seems like more people are getting hurt now. I was talking with an older soror who pledged in 1969. She was laughing about some of the stuff that they went through to become Deltas. She finished off her statements with "Y'all don't have to go through nothing any more." I was like . What was funny is that the stuff she was describing was all a part of my process. Of course I couldn't tell her that, due to the new rules regarding intake. But it burns me up to hear some one "old school" just assume that letters are just handed out on a platter now. Pledging is still alive and well within D9. Some chapters do, and some don't. But don't assume that because you are old school that you know all that "new school" goes through.

You can't go by everything you hear. And exactly whose process did you see? Pledging is so much more than what you have heard it is. People concentrate on the physical. But not everyone goes through the physical, but they are still pledged. Not getting on anyone's process just want to clear that up just asking and speaking. and seeking insight....Thank you.
I hope I don't offend you, but I get so tired of people who haven't been through the process try to critique the process. If you haven't been through it, you don't know. It's all speculation and hearsay until you have had the experience.

Actually, I was saying you may be going through more not less. And the Frats really sound scary.
