Coach Johnson left Langston in 1997 and landed his first Division I job as the Head Football Coach at Prairie View A&M University from 1997-1999. From Prairie View, Coach Johnson coached at Middle Georgia Junior College in Cochran, Georgia, from 1999-2000. Coach Johnson then ventured into the high school setting as the Head Football Coach and Athletic Director at Hearne High School in Hearne, Texas, from 2000-2002. Johnson left the high school scene returning back to the college level via Jackson State University as the Defensive Coordinator from 2002-2004.
