What's So Great About HBCU's Anyway? Posted on 04-14-2005

This is my question. I hear all kind of people lauding the HBCU experience and seem utterly enraptured with the idea that they will be able to spend the four years of their undergraduate experience with people who share their same ethnic background. 1st question: Is this at all representative of real life? From my personal experience I have found that we, or at least in the upwardly socio-economic realm that you high achieving and socially conscious African-American (predominantly) hope to take part in, live in a white world. How will an HBCU where you will be surrounded by people like you and taught be professors like you be at all representative of real life? Or at least the one you hope to be living? My 2nd question involves personal and academic preference. I have been accepted into a number of Universities and can go anywhere I want. So what would make me want to attend a HBCU rather than a more traditional Ivy League school or one of its equivalents when my goals is to become as educated as possible and subsequently be the most qualified for any future position or work that I would like to pursue. Furthermore, how diverse can an HBCU be and how much can you learn about other cultures/environments when you are surrounded my only one megaculture?

What is that supposed to mean? You need to further your education becuase right now, it's not functioning.

School is what YOU make it! You shouldn't depend on others to enhance your well being, let alon eyour education!!! Perhaps you should visit a few different HBCUs!! You seem to comment on stereotypical views and not personal ones. I, personally, atttended a predominately white school my freshman year!! The atmosphere was not too welcoming!! Nobody was mean to me or anything but my morals and interests were so different from those around me. Even their study habits were different. It was very easy to lose focus. I decided that an HBCU was the best place for me. I transfered and it added a year to my coillege carer but I think it was well worth it! Its easy to refer to those "Ivy League" schools as the best schools. The question is, "From whose perspective?" Are you willing to devote your college experience to the statistical data and stereotypical views of our country, or would you rather maximize your academic potential by studying in an environment that not only provide an excellent educational career, but also a stimulationg social life as well as an impeccable support system? Balance is very important, especially the older you get. "All work and no play" leads to stress, mental breakdowns, and sometimes an early grave. Be thankful that we as a peopel are finally in a position where we have something all our own to boast about. Many, many, many successful people are products of HBCUs!!! I'll stop here but we can talk more through IM if you like one day!!

What do you mean they have different study habit? Maybe because they study and get good grades while you negroes dont? Maybe you should try studying like they do and you would be able to spell "coillege" without the "i". Basically your saying that you dropped out of a PWI and love your little HBCU because it's easier.
