(JACKSON, Miss.) - The Jackson State University men's track team will have some tough competition as it looks to capture the NCAA's top honors in track and field. However, this weekend's NCAA Regional Competition in Baton Rouge, will showcase some of the best talent JSU has to offer in both individual and team events.
Several members of the JSU track program will look to take top places in the two-day competition hosted by Louisiana State University. According to their coach Edmond Donald, they stand in good chance of completing their tasks.
"We like to think that we have some of the best athletes in the region," said Donald. "We think that some of our athletes have a better than average chance to compete at the NCAA Nationals."
Jackson State will carry six student athletes to Louisiana for competition this weekend. They include: Michael Tinsley (110- and 400-meter hurdles), Terrell Daughtery (1,500-meter run), Joel Williams (400-meter and 800-meter runs), Terry Estwick (800-meter run), Cori Cloyd (800-meter run), and Michael Smith (400-meter run).
Jackson State last competed at the 2004 SWAC Outdoor Championships held in Houston this past May. There, Tinsley ran 13.86 to capture the title in 110 hurdles while winning the 400-meter hurdles with a mark of 50.87. Both Estwick and Cloyd finished in the top five in the 800-meter run. But it is the 4 x 400 meter relay team that will have the best chance of winning top honors at the meet. Jackson State captured the title at the conference meet with a mark of 3:07.87. That team - comprised of Estwick, Smith, Tinsley, Williams, and alternate Cloyd - will look to better both their time and their NCAA position this weekend.
