After seeing his album get pushed from its original release, Chi-Town's resident rhyme-spitter, Twista, is finally ready to unleash his new disc, Adrenaline Rush 2007, tomorrow (September 18). Twista explains to SOHH why he plans on assisting the Jena 6, what makes him the "black Jason of rap," and the reasoning behind his album setbacks.
Though the album has been done for some time now, Twista says that a few last minute clearance issues, as well as overall timing, contributed to the album's new release date.
"I really would have done it again if I had the chance," said Twista, of the album's delay. "I'm definitely happy with the record and what I put into it, but it was just...not having everything set up right. There were a couple of tracks that I really wanted on there, like the Kanye track, that we had to wait to get clearance on, but none of that bothers me. I'm a longevity artist, this is what I do."
Obviously not shaken by the industry politics, Twista says that he's grown as an artist and as a man and has reached a place in his career that has shaped the way he approaches making music.
"When I was younger, the fiesty Twista was just trying to tear everybody's head off," he recalled. "The older, O.G. Twista is like, 'I'm gonna sit back in my mansion and just paint these pictures for you.' When I put my music out there, I don't compare myself to others. I put out music now because I want to, not because I have to."
Twist also touched on the recent call that was issued by Mos Def for artists and those with influence to show their support for the "Jena 6."
"To be honest, just the way I was brought up and what I study and what I believe in, I'm slightly Malcolm X-minded anyway," Twista told SOHH. "Just hearing about it gets me mad. I don't know exactly what role I could play in the situation, but that's something that if I can help out with or get involved in, I will."
With this new set, which features guest appearances from Lil' Wayne, R. Kelly, Cee-Lo and T-Pain, as well as production from Pharrell, Kanye West and Jazze Pha, Twista is letting both fans and foes know that he's not going anywhere anytime soon.
"It's just good music. This album is going to do for fans what the first Adrenaline Rush did, give you that same feeling. I try to tell them, I'm the black Jason of rap," he says, refering to the unstopable supernatural **** of Friday The 13th fame. "Sometimes they try to burn me, sometimes they try to drown me, but I always come back."
Adrenaline Rush 2007 hits stores tomorrow (September 18).
