Tyler Perry's newest film Why Did I Get Married?opened in the number one spot this weekend, crushing The Rock's film Game Plan, George Clooney's thriller Michael Clayton and Mark Wahlberg drama We Own the Night.
Perry's film, which stars singers Jill Scott and Janet Jackson, raked in a projected $21.5 million over the weekend according to Nielsen EDI. The relationship slick bested number two film, The Game Plan ($11.5 million), as well as We Own the Night and Michael Clayton (approx. $11 million each).
"I think this is the last time it's going to surprise anyone that Tyler Perry makes big movies," Tom Ortenberg of Lionsgate Films, which released Why Did I Get Married, told USA Today. "But it has been fun confounding the experts."
While the film's success may have surprised some, it's not the first big opening for Perry, whose Madea's Family Reunion had an even bigger opening weekend last year by bringing in $30 million.
In related news, both Jill Scott and Janet Jackson have opened up recently about their struggles with weight. Scott recently told reporters she had to gain 30 pounds for her role in Why Did I Get Married? and also was asked to bulk up to play the leading lady in the Anthony Minghella film No.1 Ladies Detective Agency, while Jackson has revealed plans to write a book about her experiences with weight gain and weight loss.
Jackson is also hard at work on her next album, due out the first quarter of 2008 on her new label Island Def Jam.
Jill Scott's album The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol.3 is currently in stores. The project debuted at #4 on Billboard's Hip-Hop and R&B charts, selling nearly 150,000 copies.

I saw “Why did I get Married” on Saturday (10/13/2007). I thought it was a really nice movie. It really depicted the different situations that people go through in marriage. I would definitely recommend checking it out.
