Federal prosecutors urge prison for a Hollywood actor
Justice Department lawyers want actor Wesley Snipes to get the maximum penalty for his conviction on misdemeanor tax evasion charges. The “Blade” and “New Jack City” films star was accused of keeping millions in his earnings from the purview of the government, but only convicted on the lesser charges. Still, the feds want Snipes to serve three years in prison and pay a $5 million fine. “This case presents the court with a singular opportunity to deter tax fraud nationwide,” the government argues in its sentencing recommendation. “The fact that Snipes was acquitted on two felony charges and convicted ‘only’ on three misdemeanor counts has been portrayed in the mainstream media as a ‘victory’ for Snipes.”
