The 2nd Quarter ’08 TJ’s DJ’s Tastemakers Only DJ/Music Conference on April 16, 2008 came just in time to get everyone excited about the summer music scene. With celebrity appearances, the introduction of a new beat showcase, and a sneak peak at the hot new music dropping this summer, this event was a break from the ordinary. The conference kicked off with the inaugural TJ’s DJ’s Beat Battle. From a pool of 75 applicants, only twelve privileged producers were chosen to pair their production talents until only one remained. With the prizes including production software, TJ’s DJ’s e-blasts, submissions to national recording projects such as B.o.B, BloodRaw, and DJ Smallz (Southern Smoke), the competition was fierce! Even with the experienced judging ears of Q45 of BET’s Rap City, Slim from the multi-platinum R&B group 112, Freddie Hydro, Teddy T, and TJ Chapman (CEO, TJ’s DJ’s) a clear winner became difficult to decide. As a result, the judges were forced to call a thrilling tie between Sam Addams and Isaac Opus. Next, the TJ’s DJ’s Tasties delivered a patent leather pump promenade in women’s fashionable evening wear and undergarments. This was followed by fire performances from up-and-comers Bread Boyz, Skai, Trai’d, and BSU. Perhaps the only thing that could trump a group of **** clad coeds and great new acts was a surprise appearance from Chilli of the super group TLC. She popped in to show some love and keeping with the TJ’s DJ’s “heard-it-here-first tradition,” Chilli debuted her new solo single, “Dumb, Dumb, Dumb” before making her rounds to meet fans, take pictures and sign autographs. As the Tastemakers calmed down after an exciting dose of Chilli, the panel began to teach the game. One of the prevailing themes for the panel was “control your content; control your destiny.” Considering the sources included panelists DJ Freddy Hydro (discovered Soulja Boy), Tony Neal (founder, The Core DJs/A&R Konvict Music), Slim (112), Ivan (manager of the Grammy Award winning producing team, J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League) and Ayodele Vassall-Gore (entertainment attorney), the Tastemakers took copious notes. None more important than the panel’s advice to take five minutes to copyright all of their material before clicking the send button. After the business, the TJ’s DJ’s Showcase helped the Tastemakers unwind to the music of Tracy T, Ace Gutta, R City, Shawty Putt, Dirty, and Liquor House. Then the party really began to jump as Rich Boy, YV, Grind Mode, Playaz Circle, and Piccalo tore the stage down during the after party. But, the night was not over until dawn broke when the Tastemakers supported the **** hustle at Studio 360 courtesy of TJ’s DJ’s and the 2 Minute Warning sports/entertainment talk show for the after after party. The next conference will be held in conjunction with OZONE Magazine to present The 3rd Annual TJ’s DJ’s/OZONE Awards Weekend during August in Houston, TX.
