After I leave Coahoma I want to attend a 4 year HBCU. Can anyone give me any insite about where to go. Im doing my own research but any helpful info will be greatly appreciated especially from alumni and current students. What are some of the "better" hbcu's in your opinion?
My aunt attended jackson state for about a month.lol. they have a communications school, but as far as jackson state goes it either is or isn't for you i personally don't believe i'd do well there because the environment isn't really what i'm acustomed too. the way my aunt explained it was that she came from an environment where girls were debutantes, members of jack and jill, mom's were members of links inc, and she was use to more preppy students. If this isn't you then you'd probably like both southern and jackson. My aunt ended up prefering schools such as howard, hampton, and spelman where there were students who came from backgrounds similar to her own. While she probably could have found friends at jsu with similar backgrounds; it wasn't as common as it was at howard, which is the school she eventually ended up at. I'd recommend the John H. Johnson school of communications at howard. D.C. is a great city for this major, and Howard is an excellent university.

wow thats just wrong to put down jackson state because all hbcu's have there strengths and for mass communications clark atlanta or southern
i don't think jsu is a bad school. i said it depends on the environment you are use to, which is why i said: "as far as jackson state goes it either is or isn't for you i personally don't believe i'd do well there because the environment isn't really what i'm acustomed too" in no way does this statement put down jsu. I could say the same thing about howard, and many people do. The environment there is also either for you or not for you. Everybody knows that howard is an everyday fashion show, and was rated the second best dressed campus in the nation second only to nyu which is understandable. so obviously if you are the type to show up to school with leggings and a tshirt everyday howard might not be your best fit socially. there is nothing wrong with that. everybody has a fit. i was just explaining to the orginal poster MY perception of jsu. i admitted the type of environment that my family came from, and i did this just to show that the original poster may actually like jsu, and admittably that my perception is biased just like everybody elses.
big_gatt i agree that you should also consider clark atlanta. great communications program and its in atl. you'll also be across the street from morehouse and spelman. so therefore there will be many social interactions between all three schools.
im a mass communications major. Ive been told alot bout jackson state as well as southern. Do you ha?ve any info on them
Communications is not like the health professions, teaching or engineering....those jobs are pretty much guaranteed everywhere. With communications its all about location and networking.
DC is a great city for Communications majors, however, L.A. and NYC are the best and have the most opportunities. I have heard about JSU's program and what I hear has been positive....CAU has a good program also.
Howard has ties with BET and radio stations in the DC area. Our Career Service Center works well with graduates and students to help them find jobs and internships.
Good luck with your search
I know the process of selecting a university is difficult. However, it is well worth the time and commitment to make the right choice. The knowledge gained will influence your life, personally and professionally. With that being said, I highly recommend Tennessee State University, academically and socially. TSU is committed to educating its students as well as providing social events. TSU concept is to graduate quality rather than quantity. Good Luck!!!!
