The Greek Mix? Posted on 07-02-2004
BadBoyGood

I have a question that I would like you to seriously ponder without getting offended or defensive because in all sincerity I want to know your view...While I don't condemn people part of Greek letter organizations, do you feel that Greek life and God mix? As reflected in posts on this particular board, do you feel God condones things such as partying, beating up people for sitting on your bench after being warned, elitism, etc. I'm not asking you to compare this subject with problems in the church...I'm not asking you to compare this with anything else in society...I'm not asking you to use big name figures who are/were Greek to support your position...I'm specifically focusing on Greek Like and it's mix with God in your life, not people like MLK [please don't use greek preachers for support]...this isn't a super religious post but don't get too deep...just wanting your opinion.

Yes, and I have Greeks in the family...again, this doesn't have to be a negative topic...it's all in how you perceive it, and it's all in the reality of the situation....this isn't to bash but just simply asking a simple question...Yes or No...this isn't a topic about history but about the present...very specific topic!

Black Greek Letter Organizations (BGLOs) were founded on Christian principles...so i guess tha answer to your question is YES...GREEK LIFE AND GOD DOES MIX...i know there are a lot of things that greeks supposedly do that aren't labeled as "GODLY" but look at it this way...throwing parties and "beating people up" ...isn't the only things that we do!!!...A lot of ppl. think that greeks are there to "have fun" and/or "act a fool" but there is so much more about BGLOs that you could never know unless you are a member (having a family member that is one doesn't count)!!! Non-greeks only hear tha bad side or tha horror stories associated with greeks...when those bad things only happen on occassion but tha great things are going on all tha time...NEGATIVE GOSSIP TRAVELS FASTER THAN GOOD FACTS!!!! Remember that!!!

And I agree with that above post. It is very possible to have God in ur life and be a part of a BGLO. I have done it everyday since I gained my letters. It is VERY TRUE that gossip gives the negatives of these groups and holds back on most of the good. I guess that's just life in general. We don't loose our religious values simply because we gain the ideals of our respective organizations. There are times when those go hand in hand. As a matter of fact, my chapter specifically, goes to church together, we spent time talking about religion, and even this very topic. Adding an organzation to who you are does not mean taking the God out of who u are.
