I was online yesterday and a question was posed what is the purpose of GREEKS?
Also do GREEKS of today still carry the message that the original founders did?
And a bigger question is if there are so many GREEKS why don't they possess any type of power in the world? Have they made a difference and why havent they attempted? The person felt that GREEk orginizations were not excersizing the potential power they possess.
WHATS YOUR OPINION ON THIS????
And before anyone jumps on me I support all brothers/sisters that are greek my grandfather was a mason, and I myself hope to one day be apart of a sorority

I can't speak for all Greeks, but the purpose for which Delta Sigma Theta was originally founded was to "establish and maintain a high standard of morality and scholarship among women," while performing public service for the community, with special attention to Negro women and children. This was our founder's vision, and we have worked to not only fulfill this vision, but also to broaden our reach to help more people. As with anything, Delta Sigma Theta has evolved over time to meet the needs of its membership and the community at large. So while we are exactly what our founders envisioned, we are not totally out of their scope. Our founders had no idea that Delta Sigma Theta would grow as rapidly or to the magnitude that it did.
And we do, as BGLOs, possess a lot of power. Unfortunately, that power is not excercised as much as it could be. I would love to see all BGLOs come together to make some real political change, rather than concentrating on each individual group's projects. We really could change a lot. We have more power now than at the founding of any of our organizations. With nine organizations of professional Black people, there is no real limit to the kind of change that we could implement.
All of this is not to say that the organizations aren't working. We are all working to better the community and the world at large. I know that we have done wonders in Africa, Haiti, and other parts of the world. We have built and stocked hopitals. We have helped build and stock schools. We are trying to prevent the spread of HIV/**** in Africa and the world.
I don't think you were disrespectful in presenting your questions. I actually think that it is something that we should all think about periodically and work to make sure that when we answer the questions honestly, that we are trulu at the top of our game.
^^^^Thank you I really appreciate your honesty. I think this thread may sway ppls opinions about different organiztaions. B/c when I speak to SOME greeks they are all about popularity and not about community service and social/educational growth...It reminds me of that poem that the person wrote about pledging in vain...
I am currntly in search of choosing the right sorority for me and one of my key things is not so much the original message which most all org. had a great reason for starting...but the CURRENT MESSAGE...is this sor. a sor. that shares my beliefs and are actively trying to make a difference.
As with any organization research is always the key. The problem is that with alot of BGLO's it's hard to find an undergrad that'll sit down and tell you truely about their organization. Theya re here to promote but sometimes they feel like people are just trying to hard. Especially witht the female org. It really hard to find info. Checking out a website to me is not what im looking for when i want info. I want to know about the people there and those that i have to deal with on an everyday level. I want to know about the people who ill one day call soror.
Information isn't forthcoming like one would expect and when yout ry to do to much research your seen as trying to hard to flip-floping. So in that respect I think BGLO's need to try a little harder to make nongreeks feel welcome asking about there orgs. because knowledge is the only way that one can make an informed decision
^^^I understand where you are coming from, however it isn't as cut and dry as that. It seems to me like you are coming from the pretext that Delta (I'll use my org, since I can't speak for others) recruits. And we don't. Exactly what do you want to know about the ladies in question? Presumably, you attend classes with them and see them around the yard. What more do you want to know? I'm not asking out of hostility; I just don't understand what else you need to know before becoming a member of the org. If you are truly interested in an org; get to know the members as individuals first, not as members of XYZ. Not to mention that each sorority is soooo much larger than each individual undergrad chapter. Not to say that it's not important to get along with or know the members of an undergrad chapter, but there is sorority life after college. Remember that. People refer to your undergrad days in a sor/frat your best years. But believe me, after coming from our National Convention, I am convinced that the best days are yet to come. And I am having a ball right now.

Bravo! I really admire that and totally agree with you 100%. You go girl! Imagine the possibilities if we were to all unite and works turns a single goal together?! The possibilities are endless....
One thing I've come to realize about being Greek is that those who aren't feel that the letters define you and not the other way around. I'm sure we've all heard this time and time again, but I will continue to express the importance, as stated previously, with getting to know the individuals and then their organization.
Apparently they have some characteristics/qualities that others saw would benefit the organization as a whole. Why not seek those people out and spend time talking to them? You would be surprised what you discover.
I love being able to say that I associate myself with some very powerful, very educated and articulate women, who happen to be a part of my wonderful sorority as well.
^^^ see now.. the problem lies therein... I think thats kinda fake (not you, but the entire concept) and I HATE being fake.. They automatically think that I am just befriending them because I want to be in their sorority... The truth being that I would be friends w/ them regardless, but their letters are sorta putting them on the defense, because I DO want to be in their sorority... Like.. I can't even talk to some of my friends that pledged because they are like UBER-NEO, and they can't be real anymore.. not calling Greeks Fake, and not wanting her to have loose lips, but is there anyway that I can communicate w/ 'em w/o looking fake? hmm.. what am I asking? Ok.... you might have to disregard this entire post cuz I dunno how to put this in words....
How do you befriend a GREEK w/o them thinking that you are after their letters (even if you do want to join their sorority)? Like.. I don't know how to make it clear that even tho ________ is what I really desire to be in, and they are in it, I would rush/pledge without including them, so as to make them separate...
I dunno.. respond if you understand this... or if you have any idea of what I'm tryns say...
