Dr. Condoleezza Rice at Johnson C. Smith Univ. / HBCU Week.. Posted on 09-14-2004
NC_Intimidator

This past Monday, Dr. Condoleezza Rice was a guest speaker at my school. At first I wasn’t going to go, just based on the fact that I was thinking it was a political move on the behalf of Bush. However I changed my mind, because how many times in life will I have the opportunity to meet someone with that much power? Dr. Rice spoke at the invite only Fall Convocation on the importance of education and how choosing a major that’s dear to your heart, is very important. Not once did she bring up Bush, which really surprised me. Dr. Rice went on to talk about her history and the fact that her father was a Smith alumnus. Dr. Rice also brought up the fact that Bush has now declared this week “HBCU Week” through out the nation. For one how do you all think about us having our own week, and do you think this is just a plot for more African-American students to vote republican? What you all think?

I wish I could have went to that, but i had classes. You also had to have an invite and i didnt have that either. Honestly, alot of people I asked around campus did they know who she was and either they didn't or said "oh yea thats that goverment lady" I was like what in the world, but some people just didn't know.

I'm glad you all decided to go, that way you could judge "Condy" on her own merit. I learned my lesson about pre-judging years ago, when I heard Al Sharpton speak in person for the first time. BTW, Bush has always been supportive of HBCU's and MIs. . .he might be a separatist somewhat, but his administration has provided millions of dollars in contract money set aside specifically for HBCU's and MIs. It is still dwarved by the money set aside for most PWCs, but then again, most large PWCs are research institutions and research brings in the most money at the collegiate level. Those who attended, did she mention why she did not choose to attend an HBCU or if she is an active donor to HBCUs?

She didn't say why she didn't attend a HBCU. A lot of us just went off the fact that since she was a child prodigy, she had many offers from many different schools. She did stress the fact that her parents and grandparents went to HBCU's.
