OKAY PEOPLE, I AM A PROSPECTIVE STUDENT AND I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT SORORITIES OR FRATERNITIES. I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE ALL ABOUT. I MIGHT WANT TO JOIN A SORORITY. Y'ALL CAN'T LEAVE ME HANGIN, Y'ALL GOT TO FEEL ME IN. SO, WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT? HOLLA BACK AT CHA GURL!
Do us a favor BabyJazz, go out on google and look up somethings about the various sororities and then come back and ask questions. We need something a little more specific.
If that doesn't work for you, PM someone with your questions about their experiences. Most people on the board are fairly nice and will answer in private.
As a student in 1990, I had the same thoughts. I really wasn't impressed with the sororities on my campus. I'll be happy to share more about my experience on my campus, just email me.
As far as what changed my way of thinking when it came to sororities:
In 1991, I went to my cousins campus to a NPHC Sorority Tea (which was for all 4 sororities). Sigma Gamma Rho blew me away that day. The member that I met was thorough with her knowledge and information not only about Sigma, but also NPHC. At that time alot was changing (above ground pledging ended, interest/auxiliary groups dismantled, and new processes for everyone). She was very honest and answered people's questions.
As the brother mentioned, you must do your research. After that day I did alot of research (there are more ways now due to computers and internet) and I observed the members on my campus and their programs.
Spring 1993, I joined the wonderful world of Sigma along with 6 others. I love my sands and sorors. It has truly been a blessing for me being a part of Sigma. The work that we do in the community and bond that I share with so many others of like mind, can't be touched.
This is open for all to check out (our website and one for our undergrads):
