TOO Eager for Nalia Posted on 11-11-2004
Glamour_Pearl

Is it me or is everyone trying to sport some nalia nowadays? I've seen so many non greek groups with line jackets and shirts with whatever phi this or that. Groups like Naacp, hip hop dance groups even just random groups of friends. I mean what is going on are people that eager for some type of identity? I just wanted to know if others have seen this occuring around there way and what you think about it. I think its fine for certain groups like bands and things but not just at random.

There is a group of girls at my school, they get their "clique" shirts done just about every semester, they have a new shirt.... Think that is too much. One shirt will do it... I'm still confused to why the Pershing Rifles and Pershing Angels have a plot at my school, why they have a hand sign, and where they get their NALIA from??

Well lets clear up some confusion. The National Society of Pershing Rifles is a Military Fraternity so we do military things. We do the steppin and party hoppin thing 2. We were founded in 1894 by General John J. Pershing. Our company was founded on A&T's campus in 1953 and not once have we been off the yard. We have our plot because our company founders put in for it. Your right, we do have a hand sign and we'll throw it up all day long! I guess you like our nalia and we get ours done here in Greensboro and in SC. We'll give you his number. Any other questions you are more than welcomed to ask. our company website www.prncat.com We are a big organization and we have companys @ HBCU's such as SCSU, HOWARD, HAMPTON, NORFOLK STATE, MORGAN STATE, TUSKEGEE, FAMU, PRARIE VIEW & VA STATE. FSU & NC State and a number of "tradtional schools" also have active companys. Just about every school w/ a strong R.O.T.C. program. So when you see us on our plot dont be shy. We wont bite you, only if you ask us 2!!!! SCOO-NEY!!!

I have no problem with fully incorporated organizations having shirts, hand signs, calls and this, that and the third. My problem is when things are done at one campus that aren't recognized by any of your Frat/Sorors universally. If any member of your org does not know what a handsign or a call means then that's indicative of imitation not creation. With these homemade orgs its a bit mucg for them to have shirts and what not. But Greek Life ain't for everyone.

OBLIGATED TO ROTC??? Where did you get that from? There is no rule or law down here that if you're in ROTC that u have do P/R or P/A. And your right, people dont know about P/R before college like myself. I know alot of P/R's who went Greek and we are still bruhs. We will keep doing our thing. And the GREEK STUFF, well you can have that. We'll keep doing the FRAT STUFF. And yes BLUE & WHITE is off the chain, and we (A&T) are hosting it this year.

I had a lot to say about this, but good sense came over me. The more I thought about the ignorance of the questions and insinuations started by this topic, the more it made no sense to try to educate anyone on who I am, or even more important, why I am PERSHING. IT’S MY PLOT, IT’S MY CALL, IT’S MY SIGN, I WEAR MY NALIA, I AM P-SLASH-R, AND I LUV MY P-SLASH-A BECAUSE IT’S MY FAMILY – and I’M NOT GREEK. PR/PA & the GREEKS used to have long standing respectful relationships at many schools – some still do. I guess we don’t all know our history – ALL OF IT. Will ignorance like this topic cause us to not repeat it? I don’t blame all GREEKS for what a few of them don’t know. PEACE AND LUV TO THE BROTHERHOOD & SISTERHOOD – ALL OF THEM. SCOONEY !!!

Let me ask a question. Is the P/R handsign a universal handsign that even Colin Powell or Jack Keane or Hugh Shelton would recognize it? My question stems from the fact that more often than not organizations with white founders take on a different personality at HBCU's. Notably Alpha Phi Omega Gamma Sigma Sigma Alpha Kappa Psi Chapter traditions that are staunchly defended sometimes carry not a bit of legitamate currency anywhere else with organizations. These include nalia protocol, handsigns, brands, calls, and sweets. Would these members in the Pledge Class of Spring 04 of P/R Company Z-8: Rochester Institute of Technology Website: http://www.rit.edu/~prarm/ : Have an understanding of how to get Nalia done appropriately? Have an understanding of the significance of handsigns? Have an understanding of the significance of brands? Or how to make sweethearts?

I only have one question,Why do you even care what we do, we really don't care what the Greeks do (No disrespect intended. I have friends family and Pershing family who are members of greek orgs). But what I don't understand is why y'all are so concerned about what we do. I pledged my org just like you and earned the right to throw up my sign and wear my colors and call out when ever I feel like it. If you have a problem with that then that is your own personal problem. I don't think that we or any other non greek fraternity/sorority have to explain anything that we do to any greek org. What are you going to do...make us take it off our nillia, tell us to stop calling and throwing up our sign...be real. Leave it alone!! You can ask that of any organization! Would Zora Neale Hurston Z Phi if she saw a Zeta? Would Eleanor Roosevelt put up the pinky? Would MLK A Phi? Would Arthur Ashe carry a cane? Come on Handsigns/Nalia started around late 70's early 80's if I am incorrect please correct me. There are lot of old school greeks who you would not find doing there respective call or putting up the handsign. So don't even use that to back up ignorance.....
Thank you for your response. It provided me with information. But not an answer to my simple question. The answer to all of your questions is no. All of those notable members of BGLO's are ****. The prominent figures of P/R that I've listed are very much alive. But let's recap The simple question I asked was would they recognize the P/R hand sign? If the answer is yes, can I get a yes? If the answer is no, can I get a no? I already know the traditions and culture of BGLOs. I'm asking about P/R now.

The P/R company from Z-8 who knows? Do they interact with HBCU companies, do they go to Regionals? Do they go to NATCON? National Commanders Call? If they do then they will know..I know non-hbcu P/R companies that get Nalia done with and just like the hbcu companies, throw up handsigns, use the call, and all of that. Yes being "white founded" things are different within hbcu companies than pwi companies but we are all Pershing Fam none the less and when we all get together color/school/company whateva issues don't matter because we are family.
Brilliant redirection, at the onset of your explanation. I think I could fall in love with a mind that works like yours. But that is another story for another time. I asked about the Z-8 company because earlier a member of P/R stated:

Not one of the pictures of the N-4 Company at North Carolina A&T, from which he is a member, features a soldier in full dress uniform. Perhaps I am focusing too much on the small details. But there doesn't seem to be a balance of the military side with the social side represented on www.prncat.com at this time. Surely there was a military ball or some formal function that could have been posted as well. When I look at websites of chapters affiliated with my organization I look for evidence of adhering to our mission and main purpose. Not simply a group of pictures of them showing off the esoteric.

This, in my opinion, causes me to lose respect for members of P/R that emulate BGLO. The traditions and history that are intrinsic in your organization are elements that no other organization can lay claim to. From Birth to Decline to Disbanding to Rebirth to Vietnam to Present Day. If ever there was a role model for perserverance and the spirit of cooperation, Pershing Rifles is it. Why adopt traditions and customs of organizations that simply will not compare to yours with regards to some aspects of the history? This in my opinion makes P/R seem extra common rather than extra ordinary. I can't imagine any member of Skull and Bones with a line jacket on or throwin up hand signs.
