I live in K.C basically and I am a senior in high school. I really want the black college life experience. But when I ask my family should I go to one they always say they're are ghetto, the quality of education is bad and they're too expensive. Etc. Etc. Although the ultimate decision is mine I value my family's opinions and thoughts. Is this true (and please tell the truth). Would I be better off at a PWI. The nearest HBCU to me is Lincoln Univ. in Jefferson, MO. Is this a good school or would I be wasting my time? I don't want to regret going to a certian school and then have to turn around and transfer. I really want to learn and have great teachers who care and are dedicated to their profession. Holla Back

First of all the "Black College Experience" is only what you make of it....second all schools HBCU's and PWI's have their own individual merits and setbacks.....third liek you said the choice is yours...can you be a successful grad of an HBCU..Yes...can you be unsuccessful and graduate from a PWI..of course.....The mian thing to remember bout college is "its what you make of it" I know it sound fake and errbody tells you that but its the truth....if its not too late yet take a visit to some of the schools your lookin @ this should really help you get a feel of what its really like....talk to anyone you know that attends an HBCU and seee what they have to say....
My family is saying the same thing but I don't care. Lincoln University in Missouri is a predominately white Historically Black College( just letting you know if you already didn't) If going to an HBCU is something you really want to do, I would suggest doing a lot of research, this website is a really good tool, another one is I'll find A Way or Make One, A tribute to Historically Black Colleges or Universities by Juan Williams. It's a pretty good book and it has a profile of all the historically black colleges and interesting facts about the alumni.

i've having the same go-round with my sister, who is afraid tha even though i'm smart and determined, I may not be able to cope withthe "stigma" that comes from earning a degree from a Black college. Oh well. I know plenty of people who have attended Ohio State University and are doing NOTHING with life. On the other hand, I know a few who attended and hbcu or PBI and are financially stabile, upwardly mobile, and productive contributers to their respective communities.

there's a dozen reasons. you already named some of the one's your family gave you. some people feel they're unneccessary in the 21st century. some feel the education is not on the same level as PWI's. i'm a junior and howard has been my first choice for a year. i had someone go as far as to tell me that he was afraid i'd go to an hbcu and be "corrupted" by what the students and professors say, meaning that he didn't want me to go somewhere where being black was not an afterthought. ultimately, no matter where you go to school, someone is going to be unhappy. so you have to decide for yourself if an hbcu is for you. and if you choose to go to an hbcu, be prepared to come up against strong opposition.

man but if you go to Howard, Spelman, Morehouse, Hampton or Fisk, they're widely respected nationally. Even Tuskeegee. More white people in my hood knew about Hampton than the blacks did when I told ppl when I was going there and they were impressed. So don't believe the stigma or the hype...HBCU degrees from one of those colleges (or any HBCU depending on where ur at) hold just as much worth as a PWI, sometimes even more depending on ur chosen career field.
