It's The Year 2030...Speak Honestly To Your Freshman "C Posted on 05-29-2005
College Mom

That should read "Child". Type on this site mysteriously disappears... Ok, fast forward... You have graduated from college, grad school, etc. You and your spouse are on your game...your phenomenal "child" is at a HBCU, just wrapped up Freshman year with a 4.0 GPA and more AND is "ready" for Greekdom! You can have a boy or a girl. Oh heck, make them twins or same age cousins just for fun! Remember, you (Greek or not) are the one they go to first and foremost. How you gonna do this in 2030? I know that some of you treat these Greek questions like somebody just asked you "where do babies come from?" So, switch gears for a few minutes and share that moment in 2030 when your "child" asks you which frat or soro to be "interested" in...be real. Be in that moment of truth. Your "child" is coming to you not the HBCUCONNECT Greek Fam Message Boards which may/may not be an option. What are you really gonna say? This is a "fun" post so try and play nice. Thanks!

:-D That's TOO funny! I got about 5 HBCU students here for the Memorial Day B-4 BBQ. They are all on the computer, amongst other things, while waiting for the coals to get hot. Any way here is what they have to say: HBCU Student #1: ...now that I have slapped you stupid for bringing that pink and green up in my house we can talk... HBCU Student #2: ...yes, yes, yes! That's my boy...barking sounds. Im mo call yo daddy, grandaddy, god father and em to tell them that my boy is a real family man! HBCU Student #3: ...your grandmother will be proud that you are keeping the legacy alive! she then starts play fightin with #1 above about how tough HER line is gonna be in the Fall of '05... HBCU Student #4: (She is a thinker)...If the frats and soros don't stop killin, hazin and hatin my kids won't have no BGLO to ask me about! I may not even be Greek. I am not impressed with ANY of them...{#2 jokes and says: that's not what you said when you got otta that Kappa's bed last night } HBCU Student #5: "...shooooot. Im mo tell my kids to make um BEG fo you then go the other way... He is being loud talked and sprayed with water guns. He foolishly told a couple of frats that he MIGHT holla at them in the Fall of '06... Back to the BBQ...

The 5 HBCU students told me what they would tell their children/child when they became interested in a BGLO. The responses are noted. I actually edited, significantly, their responses to shorten things up and not cause problems. You would imagine yourself a mom in your 30's, 40's or 50's and your child is say 19 or 20. That child asks you his/her first question about his/her interest in BGLO....you respond by posting some or all of what you would tell them...thats all.

I would have a serious talk with them but only if and when they came to me. The child is the one that's there and sees what interests him or her. If its a girl...that may get hard if she decides something other than what I am, but all in all my family told me (most of which are AKAs) its for a lifetime so do what you will want to STILL be doing 40 years from now. Yet, a parent shouldn't push there child into any heavy conversations about it.

DSTined: Thanks for your thoughtful response. I guess this IS a difficult question for those on this message board. Your family support is great. I don't know where you live but most parents here are clear that "doing" another BGLO aside from theirs is a big no-no.

I WOULDN'T SAY THAT my mom is in SGRho and she supports my bid for ytc. and i have plenty of cousins who's fathers and older brothers are Que's but they supported the two twins who went kappa and alpha @ the same time. :? I yhink this is so funny because oour family reunions are hilarious Parents should know that what was right for them isn't always right for their children

Your family reunions MUST be something else... I guess my family/friends are just a bit serious about the whole Greek thing. None of my son's friends have any questions about which way to go. They go with their mom's or dad's or nothing... (cough) Did you say that you were going to bid/"pledge" at GSU? {Oh, what does ytc and smh mean?} IMHO, all of the soros at GSU are solid...tough "choice" for you though huh? Check your PM...
