I wanna go Au Natural Posted on 05-31-2005
1st Born Second

I think I wanna go natural. But I don't know where to start. Also, i kinda don't wanna give up my perm. I love going to get my hair done and all that other stuff. I've thought about getting braids and just letting my perm grow out. Is that a good start? Somebody help a Sistah out!

I've always been natural, but my hair is just straight so its not hard to fake a perm but what i usually do, is is braid my hair, rod it and sit under the dryier then take them out and let it stay curly like that, but since my hair is straight it gets really straight in the roots so it doesn't work all the time. Getting braids is a good start, just make sure that you don't keep them into long, this girl at my school left her's in so long they turned into dreds (no lie.) Also consider cutting your hair a little to cut the perm out. I am not sure what the effects of a perm is on my hair or anybody elses for that matter but i am sure you'll look nice whatever way you do it

the best thing to do Chan is go to a salon and tell the beautician you want to go natural. I am natural and i still go to da salon to get my hair done, i get it pressed. Its gonna take awhile for you to be fully natural. Probably like a year. Best thing to do is cut your hair to a reasonable length and start ya growing. You can get braids and all dat other good stuff but make sure you go to a salon after you take ya braids out everytime so they can trim ya hair and take care of it.

if you think it's for you, go for it! i had long hair until i permed it and it got damaged... about a year ago i went natural... i didn't just cut off all my hair and start over... i kept getting braids and when i took them out, i would cut off a little bit of the perm... luckily my hair grows fast... now there is no perm at all and my hair is thick and healthy (as u can see in my pic)... i say go for it and good luck!

I always wanted to go natural too but that perm box at the beauty supply kept talking to me. I just don't want to cut my hair and that's the surest way of going back natural. Imma stick with my "no perm" pact for a while and let's see how it goes.

when i was natural i kept my hair in braids most of the time. i suggest you go to a natural hair salon and ask them what they think would be best for you.

I agree with Shoya. If this isn't something that are absolutely sure u that u want to do, i would say hold out. It's bigger than "awww...Lauryn Hill's dreads are so pretty" or "i love the way Jill looks with her lil fro". It's a big transition. Becuz trust, it may look easy (and at some points it is), but natural hair takes alot of care and maintenance. And if u aren't equipped to handle that, your hair will undergo some extreme breakage. I had to learn that the hard way. I've been natural for most of my life, but in highschool i would just get my hair pressed every two weeks. It wasn't until i went to HU that i started wearing my fro. And i would just wash it and go about my bizniz for days at a time without combing it, cuz i didn't want to lose the curls. But that stuff will kink up on u, and your hair will just rip when u comb it out. I would advise going to nappturality.com and/or consulting some beauticians (that specialize in natural hair) to help u out. If you're looking for an easy transition, i would suggest braids. That's a good way to avoid alot of breakage. Then u can cut a bit of the permed hair as it begins to grow out. The point of doing that is becuz u are dealing with two different textures of hair. Sumthin is gonna have to give. Alot of females keep the permed hair on, but continue to press their hair as it growz out becuz they don't like the roots. When u perm or color your hair, u strip layers of it off with the chemicals, so that makes your hair weaker and more vulnerable to breakage. The most important thing is to avoid damaging your hair.

lol girl who you tellin. My last perm was at the end of April, I'm gonna TRY to hold out on getting my next one until the end of August or begining of Sept. I think the natural look is so cute as long as you know how to wear it and take care of it. I've seen plenty of the natural styles on women and they look lovely, but I know natural ain't for me. But to the girl who made the post, you got to seriously think about it, if you know you're going to be able to handle it. I say Go For It.

I guess it was me moving from home to go to college that made me want to stop the relaxers. When I was a little girl I had lond thick hair, but i started to get relaxers and it broke my hair off. When I got to college i didnt want to go through the whole relaxer thing cause i didnt trust anyone and it was too damn expensive. I started out with some lenth so it took me close to two years because i cut gradually. Now im free of the perm
